Walter de Clare
Walter de Clare († 1137 or 1138) was an Anglo-Norman nobleman. He was the founder of the Cistercian Tintern Abbey .
Walter de Clare was a younger son of Richard de Bienfaite and his wife Rohese, his older brother was Gilbert de Clare . He is mentioned several times between 1101 and 1131 in King Henry I's entourage . Before 1119 the king gave him the reign of Nether Gwent and Chepstow Castle in the valley of the Wye in Wales . He also owned property in Hertfordshire . On May 9th 1131 he donated Tintern Abbey, the first Cistercian monastery in Wales.
After his death, his possessions fell to his nephew Gilbert .
