Franz Skutsch
Franz Skutsch (born January 6, 1865 in Neisse ; † September 29, 1912 in Breslau ) was a German classical philologist who worked as a lecturer and professor in Breslau (1890-1912). He was one of the best experts on the history of the Latin language and a leading Plautus researcher of his time.
Life
Franz Skutsch was born on January 6, 1865 in Neisse, Silesia , the son of a Jewish doctor. The mother was born in Gradenwitz, through whom Franz Skutsch was related to the legal historian Otto Gradenwitz . Skutsch first studied law in Breslau and Jena, but turned to linguistics after attending a lecture by Georg Curtius . He then studied Classical Philology and Indo-European Studies in Heidelberg and Breslau, where he became a student of Georg Wissowas . In 1887 he went to Bonn where he in 1888 when Franz Bücheler in Latin Linguistics with a thesis on the composition of Latin words doctorate . In 1890 the habilitation followed in Breslau. He then worked as a private lecturer in Breslau. In 1893 an appointment failed and so did the attempt by his colleagues in Breslau to get him an extraordinary professorship . It was not until 1896 that he became a full professor in the course of a house call to succeed Friedrich Marx . In 1910 he received an offer to Strasbourg, which he refused. He died of cancer in 1912 at the age of 47.
Franz Skutsch converted to Protestantism in 1898, just before his marriage to Selma Dorff. Together with his wife, whom he met while attending his lectures, he had three children, including the later classical philologist Otto Skutsch .
Services
Skutsch made a name for himself as a Plautus connoisseur with his first book, Plautinisches und Romansisches , based on the qualification papers: He combined exact philological knowledge of Plautus with thorough linguistic training, which enabled him to plausibly clear up research errors and pave the way for a scientific Latin grammar .
When writing the article Cornelius Gallus for the Realencyclopadie of classical antiquity , he hypothesized that Gallus was the author of the Epyllion Ciris handed down in the appendix Vergiliana and thus triggered a heated research discussion. Skutsch tried in two writings ( From Virgil's Early Period and Gallus and Virgil ) to convince the professional world of his thesis, but he did not succeed.
His numerous linguistic and literary essays and miscellas, whose topics range from Etruscan numerals and Volscian inscriptions, through Catullus 68th poem and Horace's epodes to causes of accent changes and studies on the shortening of the lamb , were posthumously published by Wilhelm Kroll as Kleine Schriften. Skutsch's publications all represented progress in research, especially in the areas of Latin verbology and Etruscology.
Together with Paul Kretschmer, Skutsch was the founder of the magazine Glotta , the first volume of which appeared in 1909. He was recognized and appreciated internationally and was an honorary member of the Society of Sciences in Athens and, since 1910, a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
