Karl Ernst Christoph Schneider (born November 16, 1786 in Wiehe ; † May 16, 1856 in Breslau ) was a German classical philologist and professor at the Silesian Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Breslau .

Life

Karl Ernst Christoph Schneider attended the Roßleben monastery school and studied Protestant theology at the University of Leipzig from 1803 . Due to Gottfried Hermann's influence , he turned to philology and was employed as a teacher at the Nicolaigymnasium in Leipzig in 1811 . Five years later , the University of Wroclaw appointed him as an associate professor . He has been a professor since 1818 and was elected rector for the years 1833/34 and 1847/48 .

Schneider's merit is the promotion and development of the philological seminar in Wroclaw, which lay idle for a few years after the university was founded. Together with his long-time colleague Franz Passow , he led the philological seminar and reformed the philological studies in Wroclaw in accordance with his strict grammatical training. Since Schneider was more confident in Latin and Greek than Passow, he took over the grammatical and text-critical exercises with the students, who at the time included Karl Otfried Müller , August Wellauer , Gustav Pinzger , Wilhelm Kergel , August Wissowa , Heinrich Leo and Julius Sommerbrodt .

In addition to his academic teaching activities, Schneider stood out through scientific publications. Even before his time at the Nicolaigymnasium, he had written an index and a hand edition of Aesop's fables (1810). As a professor in Breslau he was particularly concerned with Plato's dialogues Politeia (critical edition 1830–1833, 1841; translation 1839; Additamenta 1854) and Timaeus (translation and bilingual edition of the commentary by Proclus , 1847). He also prepared a critical edition of Caesar's Bellum Gallicum , which appeared in the last years of his life and comprised the first seven books in two volumes (1840–1855).
