August Wissowa (born May 16, 1797 in Breslau ; † February 28, 1868 there ) was a German classical philologist and grammar school director.

After the early death of both parents, Wissowa grew up with distant relatives in poor circumstances. He attended the elementary school St. Matthias and from 1809 to 1816 the Catholic Matthias Gymnasium in Breslau. From 1811 to 1813 he lived with his teacher Augustin Kaluža , who also enabled him to earn income through tutoring. Until his final exams, Wissowa taught the sons of a Breslau merchant, in whose family he was accommodated.

On August 9, 1816, Wissowa passed the entrance examination at the still very young Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Breslau and studied philology there for three years in order to become a teacher. Franz Passow and Karl Ernst Christoph Schneider had a decisive influence on his scientific and educational orientation. Wissowa also worked as a private teacher during her studies. After the teaching degree on January 12, 1820 and the Ascension test on December 5, 1821 Wissowa was appointed senior teacher at the Catholic Matthias Gymnasium in Breslau. He also held lectures at the university, received his doctorate on August 16, 1828 , and completed his habilitation on December 20 of the same year. His lectures and exercises focused particularly on Latin literature and language.

As early as December 1829, Wissowa was offered a director's position at the Leobschütz grammar school , which he accepted at Easter 1830. In recognition of his services there, he was appointed high school professor on November 22, 1835. On April 13, 1839 he moved to the Matthias Gymnasium in Breslau (as the successor to Peter Joseph Elvenich ), where he stayed until his death. In 1866 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 3rd class with ribbon, for his services .

In addition to his pedagogical work, Wissowa wrote numerous essays and programs about high school teaching in Silesia, Greek literature ( Theocritus , Aristophanes ) and Roman historiography ( Tacitus ).

In 1850 he was a member of the Volkshaus of the Erfurt Union Parliament .

August Wissowa was the father of the grammar school teacher Theodor Wissowa (1826-1878) and the court assistant professor Otto Wissowa (1818-1870) as well as the grandfather of the historian Felix Wissowa and the philologist Georg Wissowa .

Wissowa 's pupils included Ferdinand Lassalle , who passed his school-leaving examination as an extra in 1843 with Wissowa.
