Konrad Zacher
Konrad Zacher (born January 18, 1851 in Halle , † November 4, 1907 in Breslau ) was a German classical philologist who worked as an associate professor at the University of Breslau (1881-1907).
Life
Konrad Zacher, the son of Germanist Julius Zacher (1816–1887), grew up in Halle and Königsberg, where his father initially worked as a librarian and later as a professor of German philology.
Konrad Zacher attended the high school in Königsberg and from 1863 the Latin school of the Francke Foundations in Halle. After graduation (1867) he studied classical philology, history and education at the universities of Halle and Berlin , interrupted by voluntary participation in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 . Halle Zacher in 1873 with a thesis De prioris nominum compositorum Graecorum partis formatione doctorate and in 1877 habilitation .
After a one-year study trip to Italy (1880/1881), Zacher was appointed as a paid associate professor for classical philology at the University of Breslau . Since October 1, 1884, Zacher also gave lessons in art history at the Royal Art and Trade School . Despite many years of varied teaching activities, he remained an associate professor until his death on November 4, 1907 and did not receive any offers at foreign universities.
In his research, Zacher was particularly concerned with the comedy poet Aristophanes , the Greek word formation theory and pronunciation. His work received little recognition in the scientific world. Especially his critical edition of the Knights of Aristophanes (Leipzig 1897) was judged negatively by the professional world ( Georg Kaibel , Johannes Vahlen ).
The philologist Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff tried to hinder Zacher's academic advancement. In a letter to the Ministerialdirektor Friedrich Althoff dated August 22, 1889, he assigned Zacher to the "zeros and minus sizes" of the Breslau philology and added: "Kaibel and I warned against Zacher in vain at the time". When Zacher's appointment as full professor was under discussion, Wilamowitz elaborated his judgment on Zacher (letter of February 8, 1891):
“I can overlook his scientific achievements, which Aristophanes, or rather his explanatory, tackle; they are not wrong, but terribly insignificant. and his teaching successes are best characterized by the private lecturers who have overtaken him one after the other. "
Years later, on August 13, 1907, Wilamowitz urgently advised Zacher not to be promoted: “The first thing is that Zacher does not advance: since philology in Silesia is now as deep as nowhere else, you can do not ruin it by promoting a man who, as a teacher, may have made even more Fiasco than as a scholar.
