Josephine of Belgium
Joséphine Caroline Marie Albertine of Belgium (born October 18, 1872 in Brussels , † January 6, 1958 in Namur ) was a princess of Belgium and by marriage Princess of Hohenzollern .
Life
Joséphine was a daughter of Prince Philip of Belgium , Count of Flanders (1837–1905) from his marriage to Marie Luise (1845–1912), daughter of Prince Karl Anton von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen . Her younger brother Albert became King of the Belgians in 1909.
On May 28, 1894, she married her maternal cousin, Prince Karl Anton von Hohenzollern (1868–1919), a son of Prince Leopold von Hohenzollern and younger brother of the Romanian King Ferdinand I. The marriage turned out to be a happy one. Together with her husband, Joséphine bought Burg Namedy as a residence, the mirror hall of which she converted into a military hospital during the First World War . After the war, the names Princess von Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha , Duchess of Saxony were dropped from her name.
On August 6, 1935, 16 years after the death of her husband, Princess Joséphine entered a Benedictine monastery in Namur, Belgium, where she died at the age of 85. There she is buried in the Couvent des Soeurs de Notre-Dame.
