Harriet van Ettekoven

Harriet van Ettekoven (born January 6, 1961 in Zandvoort ) is a former Dutch rower . She competed in three Olympic Games in four competitions, won a bronze medal and was fourth three times.

Athletic career

The 1.80 m tall Harriet van Ettekoven took eighth place together with Lynda Cornet in the two without helmsman at the World Championships in Duisburg . Of the seven boats that were in Duisburg before the Dutch women, were the two from East Germany, the Soviet Union and from Bulgaria due to the Olympic boycott a year later not with the Olympic Games in Los Angeles at the start. In total, only six two-men competed in Los Angeles, Harriet van Ettekoven and Lynda Cornet rowed three and a half seconds behind the third-placed boat from the Federal Republic of Germany across the finish line and were thus Olympic champions. Even in the aft , only six boats competed. In the eighth of the Netherlands sat the crews from the two, the double and the four with helmswoman . The Dutch women won the bronze medal behind the boats from the United States and Romania, 0.7 seconds ahead of the Canadians.

In 1985 Harriet van Ettekoven competed at the World Championships in Mechelen in double sculls and finished sixth. In 1986 in Nottingham she finished eleventh in a single , in 1987 in Copenhagen she was ninth in a double with Greet Hellemans without a helmswoman. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , she competed in one. In the run-up she took third place behind Jutta Behrendt from the GDR and the Romanian Mărioara Popescu . The Dutchwoman was also third in the semifinals, this time behind Jutta Behrendt and behind Anne Marden from the United States. In the final, Behrendt won ahead of Marden and the Bulgarian Magdalena Georgiewa . Harriet van Ettekoven took fourth place, three and a half seconds behind the Bulgarian.

At the World Championships in 1989 in Bled she was fifth in the single, in 1990 in Tasmania she reached fourth place and in 1991 in Vienna she was seventh. In 1992 she switched to the double fours. Laurien Vermulst , Marjan Pentenga , Anita Meiland and Harriet van Ettekoven took third place behind the Germans and the Romanians. In the repechage, the Dutch women crossed the finish line behind the boat from the United States. In the final, the Germans won ahead of the Romanians and the boat from the United Team . Seven seconds behind, the Dutch women crossed the finish line in fourth place, a quarter of a second ahead of the US boat.
