Helmut Digel 2007

Helmut Digel (born January 6, 1944 in Aalen ) is a former German sports official, sports scientist and handball player. From 1993 to 2001 he was President of the German Athletics Association . The professor emeritus was director of the Institute for Sports Science at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen from 2002 to 2010 .

Life

Between 1964 and 1967 Digel was active as a handball player for Bundesliga club SV Möhringen .

At the University of Tübingen he studied German, sports science and education, where he also received his doctorate in 1976 ( language and speaking in sports ). He then taught as a professor at the universities of Frankfurt / Main (1978 to 1982), Darmstadt (1985 to 1999) and Tübingen (1982 to 1985 and 1999 to 2010).

Digel, whose scientific research focus was the sociology of sport, is the author of numerous publications, especially on high-performance sport.

Digel was President of the German Athletics Association from 1993 to 2000 and Vice President of the National Olympic Committee from 1993 to 2002 . He was also President of the Organizing Committee of the European Athletics Championships in 2002 . In 1994 and 1998, Digel was named Sports Official of the Year .

From 1993 to 2002 he was Vice President of the National Olympic Committee . From 2002 until its dissolution in 2006, Digel was an honorary member of the National Olympic Committee. From 2001 to 2007 Digel was Vice President of the International Athletics Federation (IAAF), from 2007 to 2015 he was a member of the IAAF Council.

In 1999 he proposed to open new world record lists from 2000 onwards and thus to draw a symbolic line under the records achieved by state compulsory doping in competitive sport in the GDR . His proposal was rejected.

At the end of September 2016, the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported , citing a former interim general secretary of the IAAF, that Digel should have received "additional compensation". These payments were not covered by the association's rules. The report cites a sum of around $ 3,000 that Digel is said to have received monthly for at least five years. Since he is said to have known early on of the corrupt practices of IAAF President Lamine Diack and did not make this public, he is now considered persona non grata in sport . Digel rejected the allegations and stressed that he "never knew anything about these events". Digel is described as an adversary of Diack "in many sport-political questions", but shied away from open resistance. Digel once said: “I kind of failed because of this man”. He admitted mistakes, so his involvement in athletics in the field of marketing and television was “probably oversized” compared to reform efforts. "The real facts and my view of things were not taken into account in any representation," he criticized. However, he has nothing to blame, Digel emphasized in January 2018 to the newspaper Stuttgarter Nachrichten . Today he mainly expresses himself on his blog.
