Eucarpio Espinosa

Eucarpio Espinosa Fuenzalida (* 1867 in Vichuquén ; † January 6, 1934 in Santiago de Chile ) was a Chilean painter.

Espinosa studied at the Academia de Pintura with Juan Mochi , Pedro Lira and Cosme San Martín . Then he took lessons from Alfredo Valenzuela Puelma . From 1896 to 1904 he was an art teacher at the Liceo de Hobres in Talca.

In 1906 he received a state grant to study in Europe. At the Academie Jullien in Paris he was a student of Jean Paul Lorens . In the first year of his studies he received an exhibition in the salon of the Société des artistes français . Due to the difficult budget situation after the earthquake in Valparaíso in the summer of 1906, government funding was withdrawn from him in 1907 and he had to return to Chile.

In 1911 Espinosa returned to Paris. There he entered the Academia Grand Chaumiere and studied with Richard Müller and Jules Simon . From 1913 he lived in Chile again. Espinosa's works have been shown at exhibitions in Chile, France, Spain and the USA. He has received several awards, including a gold medal at the Exposición Internacional in Santiago in 1910 and a second prize at the Exposición Internacional in Savilla in 1920. In 19823 the Instituto Cultural de Providencia held a retrospective of his works. Paintings from Espinosa can be found in the collection of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes .
