Günter Garbrecht (born January 6, 1950 in Bünde ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 2000 to 2017 he was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Life
After graduating from primary school in 1965, Garbrecht completed an apprenticeship as a toolmaker . From 1970 to 1973 he was the secretary of the SJD "Die Falken" in the East Westphalia-Lippe district, before doing basic military service from 1974 to 1975. He then studied from 1976 to 1978 at the University of Economics and Politics in Hamburg. For the next few years he worked as a temporary worker from 1978 to 1980, then as a toolmaker from 1981 to 2000.

Garbrecht became a member of IG Metall in 1965 and a member of the SPD in 1973. Since 1986 he has been chairman of the working group for employee issues in the SPD sub-district of Bielefeld. From 1984 to 1989 he was a member of the Bielefeld-Mitte district council. Since 1989 he has been a member of the Bielefeld City Council, where he has been chairman of the Social and Health Committee since 1994. From 1994 to 2000 he was a member of the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Assembly . In the state elections in 2000 he was elected to the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia, which he continued to belong to after the state elections in 2005 . He represents the constituency of Bielefeld I (92) as a directly elected member. In his first legislative period he was deputy chairman of the study commission on the situation and future of care in North Rhine-Westphalia . He was also a member of the Budget and Finance Committee and the Urban Development and Housing Committee. Since the state elections in 2005 he has been chairman of the state parliament's committee for work, health and social affairs and deputy chairman of the interior committee. In the state elections in 2010 and 2012 , Günter Garbrecht again won constituency 92 for the SPD. He is no longer a member of the state parliament elected in 2017.
