Martin von Feuerstein
Carl Martin Feuerstein , from 1914 Ritter von Feuerstein , (born January 5, 1856 in Barr ; † February 13, 1931 in Munich ) was a German painter and university professor . He was a later representative of the Nazarenes , but also incorporated elements of Impressionism and Art Nouveau in his work, which was shaped by religious motifs .
Life
Feuerstein's ancestors came from the Kleinwalsertal . His father was the sculptor Johann Martin Feuerstein, his mother Marie Agathe Catharine Feuerstein nee Müller. He attended high school in Colmar until 1870 and initially studied in Munich. In 1878 he moved to Paris , from 1880 to 1882 he worked as a genre painter in Alsace . In 1882/1883 he made a trip to Italy and then went to Munich, where he turned to religious painting. From 1898 to 1924 he was professor of religious painting at the Munich Art Academy .
For his achievements, King Ludwig III awarded him . 1914 the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown . The award was linked to the elevation to the personal nobility status and he was allowed to call himself Ritter von Feuerstein after his entry in the nobility register .
Works
Feuerstein's works can be found in Munich museums, in the Munich church St. Anna im Lehel , in the church Ss. Corpus Christi in Berlin, in the Church of the Sacrifice of Mary in Riezlern (Kleinwalsertal), in Regensburg churches (Carmelite Church of St. Theresa and Parish Church of St. Wolfgang), in the Church of St. Klara in Nuremberg, in Alsatian churches (Church of Our Lady in Thierenbach, St. Ludwig in Strasbourg , St. Joseph in Strasbourg-Königshofen , Dominican Church Colmar ), in Breisgau and in the German chapel of the Basilica of St. Anthony in Padua . Two large side altar paintings (Mother of God and Holy Family) can be found in the Church of St. Agatha in Dietikon (Switzerland). In addition, many works are privately owned. Feuerstein was married to a sister of Emil Keyser . Since she came from Stans and her sister was married to Ernst Zimmermann , they often spent their holidays together in Stans, where they also met Eduard Zimmermann .

Among the pupils of Martin von Feuerstein were the Düsseldorf portrait painter Franzjosef Klemm as well as the painters Theodor Baierl , Heinrich Barth , Hermann Bergenthal , Franz Xaver Dietrich , Klaas Koster , Georg Vogt and the church painters Leonhard Götz , Georg Kau and Josef Wittmann .
