The Catholic Parish Church of St. Ludwig (Église Saint-Louis) is a small baroque church in downtown Strasbourg in Alsace . It is not to be confused with the neo-Gothic Protestant parish church St. Ludwig / Saint-Louis in the Strasbourg district of La Robertsau .

history

Was up to at the site of the Church Reformation a Carmelite monastery . In 1528 this was secularized and its buildings turned into residential buildings.

In 1687 Louis XIV founded the current church in the course of the recatholization of Alsace, which he dedicated to his royal predecessor Saint-Louis . In 1790, during the French Revolution , the church was turned into a tobacco warehouse. In 1805 it burned down. In 1827 the restored church, which was kept extremely simple on the outside, was consecrated again.

Furnishing

In the course of the 19th century it was given a partly neo-baroque and partly contemporary interior. Most notable are the listed organ from 1896 and the choir paintings by Martin von Feuerstein .

organ

The organ was built by Charles and Edgard Wetzel in a neo-baroque organ case . It replaced an instrument made by Jean-Conrad Sauer. The organ work itself is based on organs from Cavaillé-Coll. It has 25 stops on two manuals and a pedal . The main plant (Grand Orgue) is equipped with Barker machines. The instrument has only been slightly modified over time. In 1973, a number of rows of pipes in the main plant (Grand Orgue) were stolen. They were replaced in 1983.
