The Dominican Church ( Église des Dominicains ) is after the Martinsmünster the second largest and architecturally second most important church in the city of Colmar in Alsace . The former collegiate church of a dissolved Dominican monastery is now famous as the installation site of the “ Madonna im Rosenhag ” by Martin Schongauer , an undisputed masterpiece of German painting, but it also contains other art treasures of great importance.

The Gothic church of the monastery, founded in 1277, was built from 1289 to 1346. The 35 meter long nave with a flat ceiling is divided into three parts by tall and slender columns. The current room height (around 28 meters) corresponds to the current floor level, which is around 80 centimeters higher than the original. The Gothic style choir with ribbed vault is 30 meters long and significantly narrower and slightly less high than the nave.

The “Madonna im Rosenhag” is located at the entrance to the choir, where it was installed in 1973 after it was stolen from its previous location, the Martinsmünster, in 1972. Other important pieces of equipment are the ten choir windows with legends of saints from the 14th century, which are considered the most important collection of medieval leaded glass windows in Colmar, as well as parts of the choir stalls and the choir altars in rococo style by Gabriel Ignaz Ritter (1732-1813), which were made after 1790 Marbach Abbey were transferred here.

Another part comes from the former, Upper Alsatian monastery Alspach near Kaysersberg . At the end of the 19th century the church was restored, with a portal in neo-Gothic style by Théophile Klem . The extremely richly decorated frame of Schongauer's painting also comes from Klem's workshop; the depictions of saints on the side wings are works by Martin von Feuerstein .

The magnificent organ from 1726, formerly set up by Andreas Silbermann , is now in the parish church of Niedermorschwihr .
