Georg Reiner Kau (born January 6, 1870 in Neuss , † June 28, 1947 in Munich ) was a German church and glass painter and illustrator.

Life and works

Georg Kau began his training in the educational establishment of the Berlin Museum of Decorative Arts. After becoming a decorative painter there, he became a pupil of Martin von Feuerstein in Munich in 1897 and enrolled at the art academy there on May 14, 1898, where he attended the nature class with Gabriel von Hackl . As an assistant to Feuerstein, he was involved in the execution of the Way of the Cross for the Church of St. Anna in Munich and in 1903/04 in the painting of the parish church in Riezlern . Here he left a portrait of his teacher: St. Joseph in the picture on the left wall of the choir, which shows the shepherds adoring the baby Jesus , bears Feuerstein's features. Feuerstein's son was the model for one of the shepherd boys. The church of St. Trinitatis in Weißenthurm was expanded at the beginning of the 20th century in the neo-Romanesque style and at that time also decorated with wall paintings by Kau. Likewise, the Way of the Cross in the parish church of St. Mauritius Kärlich, painted on canvas in 1935, is a work by Georg Kau.

He created the image of St. Anthony for a church in Erlangen . For the altar of the church in Rixheim in Alsace he painted a rosary picture , for the high altar of St. Matthias in Neuwied he created two wing pictures and for the hospital church in Strasbourg . An altarpiece for the Magdalenenkirche in Strasbourg was destroyed by fire. For the church in Deutsch Kamitz in Upper Silesia he painted a high altar picture with the theme of the Assumption of the Virgin .

Kau was involved in the restoration of the church in Brixen im Tal. He painted the church in Anklam and the chapel of a hospital in Nymphenburg . He created several wall paintings for the Trinity Church in Ludwigshafen am Rhein . Further works by Kau are the frescoes in Maria Himmelfahrt in Andernach , also called Mariendom, from 1929.

For the painting of the Maximilianskirche in Munich , he submitted proposals that were awarded but not carried out. It was the same with the designs for the church in Augsburg-Pfersee.

As a glass painter, he created the memorial window in the Protestant church in Oberkleen . In 1921 he designed three small windows for the choir of the parish church in Höchen .

He also illustrated the Beersche saint legend, which was published by Habbel in Regensburg .

Kau exhibited variously in the Glaspalast in Munich. In 1914 he showed the interior of a village church , in 1916 a fishing pier and in 1922 the Residenz-Galerie .
