The Roman Catholic parish church Riezlern is in the village of Riezlern in the town of Mittelberg in the Kleinwalsertal in the district of Bregenz in Vorarlberg . It is dedicated to the feast day of the Sacrifice of Mary and belongs to the deanery of Vorderwald-Kleinwalsertal in the diocese of Feldkirch . The building is a listed building .

history

The Kleinwalsertal was formerly available to the bishops of Augsburg and the nobles of Rettenberg as a hunting area. During the great escape from Tannberg around 1300, some emigrated Walser families from the Valais settled . They called their settlement Zu den Rützlern , from which today's name Riezlern arose.

The name of the church goes back to an Orthodox St. Mary's Church in Jerusalem , which was destroyed around 560 AD.

A plaque from 1471 reminds of the original church. This rather south-east facing church was consecrated on August 13, 1473 by the Augsburg auxiliary bishop Johannes Kerer. In 1684 the church was extended and redesigned in baroque style. Due to traffic conditions, the traditional easting of the church was dispensed with and a northing was carried out.

In 1508 Riezlern became independent and an independent parish from the Oberstdorf parish church. In 1785, because of the great distance, the districts of Innerschwende , Ausserschwende , Seite and Egg-Mittelberg (together with 131 souls) came from the Mittelberg parish to the Riezlern parish.

Released from the diocese of Augsburg in 1816 and accepted into his diocese by the Prince-Bishop of Brixen , the church belonged to the Apostolic Administration of Innsbruck-Feldkirch after the loss of South Tyrol in 1921, from which the Diocese of Innsbruck emerged in 1964 . Since 1968 the parish has been subordinate to the newly established Feldkirch diocese and is part of the deanery of Vorderwald-Kleinwalsertal .

In 1890, Bishop Hadrian von Sitten presented the Walser community with relics from the Theban Legion , which are kept in the shrine under the popular altar. This is a reminder of Saint Mauritius and the testimony of his companions, who are at the cradle of the Walsers.

Repeated renovation work on the tower and church meant that the parish decided in 1882 to completely rebuild the church. Work started in 1889. The design comes from the architect Johann Mayer in Lucerne. The construction was carried out by master builder Wilhelm Hagspiel from Oberstdorf . The walls and tower of the old church were blown up. On November 19, 1891, the church was authorized (blessed) by the local pastor Dressel and on June 12, 1894 by Vicar General Dr. Johann Zobl von Feldkirch will be consecrated.

When entering the church, the painting by Professor Martin von Feuerstein , Munich, and his students of the master class ( Theodor Baierl , Franz Xaver Dietrich and Georg Kau ) catch the eye. The painting is intended to illustrate the involvement of Mary in the redemption of the people. It ends with Mary's coronation by Jesus Christ. The twelve frescoes on the side walls of the nave represent the ancestors of Mary, important in terms of salvation history. On the male side these are Adam , Noe, Abraham, Jacob, David and Solomon and on the female side Eve, Sara, Rebekah, Rachel, Rahab and Ruth. Feuerstein gave Abraham the facial features of the then pastor of Riezlern, Julian Längle. The church could also be called a flint museum.

The monumental painting in the apse above the high altar was created by Franz X. Dietrich according to Feuerstein's instructions and depicts the coronation of Mary in heaven with the joyful sympathy of the angels. Jesus is shown as a teacher on the pulpit. The four evangelists on the parapet are the work of the artist Alois Reich. The baptismal font next to the right side altar bears the year 1608. In 1994, carpenter Erich Türtscher made the people's altar from parts of the former communion bench. In the substructure it hides the bones of the martyrs of the Theban Legion, which the Bishop of Sion sent to the Walser communities in 1890 as a sign of their solidarity with their Christian origins in St. Maurice in the lower Valais. The organ from 1892 was built by the Anton Behmann company in Schwarzach and expanded to 19 sounding registers in 1964 by Guido Nenninger, Munich .

The bell in the tower consists of six steel bells that were cast by the Bochum Association in Bochum in 1949. The bells have a total weight of 12236 kilograms and sound in the tones hde-fis-ah. A small weather bell is attached to the ridge above the choir building.
