Theodor Baierl (born November 8, 1881 in Munich ; † 1932 there ) was a German painter and fresco artist .

life and work

Baierl came from a simple background. He studied at the Munich Academy with Martin von Feuerstein , Carl von Marr , Hugo von Habermann and Franz von Stuck .

In Munich, Baierl was part of the Munich Secession movement . What is remarkable is his preference for the art of the late Middle Ages, the Quattrocento , from which he was very strongly influenced in his technique as well as thematically. In his figurative and landscape paintings, influences of the early Italians and Dutch can be seen. Pictures like “Knight with Death” also show a clear homage to Dürer .

By mastering the techniques of the old masters, Baierl was extremely popular as a church painter for a long time. There are a number of Bavarian churches with altarpieces and frescoes by Baierl, the modern date of which is not always obvious. Examples of his fresco painting can be found in the Maximilianskirche in Munich (apse), altarpieces and stations of the cross in the parish church in Pfersee, parish church in Schweinfurt (apse), altarpiece in the Fugger chapel near Kirchheim in Swabia (warrior memorial image), ceiling paintings in the parish church of St. Johannes der Anabaptist in Mündling (1916), mainly on behalf of the state, but also on a private basis. He also worked as a draftsman for glass painting. After the First World War and the failure of the previous clients, he was forced to reorient himself, turned to easel painting and had to deal with the art movements of his time.

Exhibitions

Baierl took part in the collective exhibitions of the Munich Glass Palace in 1920, 1922, 1925, 1927 and 1929 , whereby his superior techniques, similar to the old masters, are noted in the exhibition reports. In 1937, five years after his death, a personal exhibition was held in the Museu das Janelas Verdes in Lisbon from April 30 to May 21, 1937.
