Balthasar Sartorius

Balthasar Sartorius also: Schneider (born January 6, 1534 in Oschatz ; † September 14, 1609 in Leipzig ) was a German Lutheran theologian .

Life

Sartorius was the son of a citizen. At the age of fourteen he became a chaplain at the court of the then Duke and later Elector Moritz von Sachsen in Torgau . At the age of sixteen, Balthasar moved to the University of Wittenberg , where he matriculated on September 6, 1550. Here he attended the lectures of Philipp Melanchthon and put the scholarly name Sartorius on by latinizing his surname. In the winter semester of 1555 he moved to the University of Leipzig , where his training was directed by Joachim Camerarius the Elder . Trained in this way, he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophical sciences in 1559. Then he became the third teacher at the electoral Saxon state school Pforta and in 1564 was vice-rector of the educational institution. He also pursued theological studies in Leipzig. So he became a Baccalaurus of theology on October 2, 1568, April 23, 1569 he was Saturday preacher at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig and in 1570 he became Superintendent of Grimma . In 1572 he obtained a licentiate in theology in Leipzig and received his doctorate in 1573.

In the same year he received the task of leading the education of Princes Friedrich Wilhelm of Saxe-Weimar and Johann von Saxe-Weimar in Weimar from the Saxon Elector August . In addition, he had enrolled at the University of Jena in 1573 , where he received a theological professorship in 1575. As a university professor in Jena, he also took part in the university's organizational tasks and was rector of the Alma Mater in the summer semesters 1577, 1581 and in the winter semester 1585 . In 1588 he became superintendent and consistorial assessor in Meissen , from where he was dismissed as a cryptocalvinist in 1592 because of his denominational attitude . He moved to Leipzig, where he was forbidden to continue working and was given a pension. With the help of his former pupil and then Saxon administrator Friedrich Wilhelm von Sachsen-Weimar, he received an extraordinary theological professorship in 1597 and became a colleague at the great princes' college.

Sartorius married on October 18, 1569 in Leipzig with Elisabeth Salmuth (* August 14, 1551 in Leipzig; † June 19, 1601 in Leipzig), the daughter of Heinrich Salmuth and his wife Elisabeth Pfeffinger (* 1529 in Sonnenwalde; † 4. July 1601 in Leipzig). The marriage resulted in nine children, of whom two sons and two daughters survived the father. From the children we know:
