Isha Isatu Sesay ([ ˌaɪʃə_səˈseɪ ]; Isha Sesay ? / I ) (born January 6, 1976 in Bordeaux , France ) is an American television journalist. From 2005 she worked at CNN and CNN International . From 2017 she was the presenter of the show CNN Newsroom Live from Los Angeles . She left CNN in August 2018. Since then she has dedicated herself to various projects, including founding WE Can Lead in 2014 , a non-profit educational organization for African girls in Nigeria. Audio file / audio sample

Youth and education

Isha Sesay was born the middle of three siblings. She has an older sister and a younger brother. Sesay is the daughter of Kadi Sesay , her father was a consultant for the Sierra Leone Produce Marketing Board (SLPMB). He died in 1988. Her parents were originally from Sierra Leone and are Temne . Isha Sesay attended Fourah Bay College School in Freetown until the age of 16 . In 1992 she returned to the UK for further studies.

After completing her A-Levels qualifications, Sesay applied to Trinity College (Cambridge) . There she studied English.

Career

After university

At the beginning of their journalistic activities Sesay worked as unpaid researcher for the talk show Kilroy the BBC . She was taken on as a fully paid permanent employee.

In 1998 she moved to Glasgow to work for BBC Scotland . After some time behind the camera, she began her first engagement as a presenter for BBC Choice .

Sesay then moderated several other formats on BBC, CNN and TWI before switching to Sky in March 2002 .

CNN

In November 2005, Sesay went to CNN International and has hosted shows from Atlanta , Georgia since then . Among the shows she co-hosted were International Desk and Backstory , where she took over the lead from Michael Holmes .

In 2012, Backstory was switched from a daily to a weekly broadcast.

Isha Sesay hosted a new show CNN NewsCenter with John Vause in 2015 . CNN NewsCenter was broadcast from Los Angeles .

In 2018, Sesay reported on the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle .

On August 2, 2018, Isha Sesay announced that she had left CNN after 13 years. As a justification, she gave the all-consuming coverage of Donald Trump's presidency.

Sesay also announced that she was working on a book about the kidnapping of the Chibok girls, and that she would like to take some time to return to Africa-related issues afterwards.

She also wants to devote more time to her organization WE Can Lead .

In 2014, Isha Sesay founded the non-profit organization WE Can Lead (Women Everywhere Can Lead). As a non-profit organization, it aims to enable African girls to have a self-determined future through education . The better educational requirements and the focus on leadership skills should enable them to shape their own lives, to set up and manage their own projects and companies. In August 2018, mostly Nigerian girls took part, but the program is in principle open to girls of all African origins.

A two-stage program is offered, divided into a basic and a specialization phase. In the first stage, the girls learn basic skills such as general financial literacy , critical thinking and positive health practices. In addition, the girls' self-confidence and self-confidence should be promoted. After that, the girls can apply for the specialization phase. Those who get a place can then take part in a Young Leader development program. The others can take part in so-called empowerment camps and rhetorical seminars. The participants receive financial support for school supplies, school uniforms and similar things. In August 2018, more than 600 girls between the ages of 12 and 18 took part in offers from WE Can Lead .

In January 2017 the actor Idris Elba auctioned a dinner with him to raise money for WE Can Lead . The two cooperated again in 2019 for a donation raffle . In the raffle there was a McLaren 720S Coupe to be won.

Activities since 2018

Together with the Senegalese journalist Aboubacry Ba, Sesay moderated the Aiteo CAF Awards 2018 , which took place in the Center international de conférences Abdou Diouf (CICAD) on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 in Dakar, Senegal.

In June 2018, Sesay conducted a question and answer session with the documentary film director Slater Jewell-Kemker and the producer Adrian Grenierdes of the film Youth unstoppable . The film is about the green youth movement.

In 2018, she also moderated a conversation with Dr. Samantha Nutt, the founder of War Child USA . War Child USA is an aid organization for children in war zones.

Her book on the mass kidnapping of Nigerian schoolgirls in 2014, called Beneath the Tamarind Tree , was published in July 2019 by HarperCollins in print and on various platforms as an audio book .

In April 2019 she led a discussion with Michelle Obama under the name Becoming: an intimate conversation with Michelle Obama in front of 20,000 guests in the Accor Hotel Arena in Paris and Amsterdam.

In June 2019, Sesay appeared as a speaker at the Women Deliver Conference 2019 in Vancouver , Canada . Women deliver is an international conference on the topics of gender equality , health and well-being of girls and women in the 21st century.

She was an active speaker at the Brilliant minds event held in Stockholm , Sweden in June 2019 . The event was founded in 2015 by Spotify founder and CEO, Daniel Ek and the entrepreneur Arash Pournouri. The three-day event aims to promote the free exchange of ideas in the field of music and technology.

In September 2019 Sesay was invited as a guest speaker at the BBC in the Africa today program for two days. She spoke about the role of women in the media.

In September 2019 she was one of the hosts of the 2019 Global Citizen Festival alongside Bozoma Saint John . This event combines live music with podium discussions about global problems and concerns from the environment, society and politics.

Also in September 2019 she was the spokesperson at the Place for Peace Event organized by the Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative (WPDI) .

Personal

On January 5, 2013, Sesay got engaged to her work colleague Leif Coorlim. The two married in August 2013. In August 2018, Sesay announced that the couple had divorced.

Isha Sesay is committed to strengthening the rights of women, especially in Nigeria in connection with the mass kidnapping of Nigerian schoolgirls in 2014 by Boko Haram from Chibok and on February 19, 2018 from Dapchi . She showed a lot of personal commitment to the girls and their families. Among other things, she conducted critical interviews with participating nationals, showed presence in the Twitter campaign #BringBackOurGirls and spoke at the UN . She condemned the repeated kidnapping of 110 Dapchi girls as a "national disgrace" following a terse tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari calling the kidnapping a "national disaster".
