A raffle (plural raffles , v a date also.. Raffles ; ital .: lottery ) is a raffle of gifts at parties or charitable events.

history

Röllchenlose, approx. 1940

Originally the raffle was a lottery game common in Italy , in which the tickets were drawn from a drum. Since the slips of paper with the ticket numbers tumbled into each other in the drum (Italian: tombolare ), this type of lottery got its characteristic name. Tombolas were played mainly at folk festivals by the crowd gathered in public places.

In today's sense, a raffle in German-speaking countries is an event that is mostly organized for the purpose of raising funds for social or charitable purposes. This is why the name Tombola differs from the more lottery and bingo-like games in France, Italy, Spain, Turkey and England. However, several German authorities classified a raffle planned for a school festival as illegal gambling .

The available prizes (which are often donated) are numbered and at the same time tickets are sold to the visitors and participants of the event (street festival, ball, club celebration, etc.). Participation in the raffle is often linked to the entry price to an event (all participants who have paid the regular entry price then automatically take part in the raffle). The actual raffle does not begin until all the tickets have been sold and the winners of the individual prizes are drawn .

Public raffles are mostly used to raise funds and are therefore mostly subject to approval. The legal conditions can vary from city to city or from state to state. For Munich it says: According to the provisions of lottery law in Bavaria, a game of chance occurs if a fee is requested for the acquisition of a chance to win (ticket) in a so-called tombola and the decision about the win thus depends entirely or largely on chance. Subject to authorization gambling, when it becomes public ... organized . In Switzerland, too, raffles require approval from a certain expected income level.

  • A raffle, famous in the Federal Republic of Germany, takes place every year at the Ball des Sports for the benefit of Deutsche Sporthilfe . There the tickets are still offered in different colors and the winning color is determined before the individual drawing. The prizes include several donated expensive automobiles.
  • In Austria there is often a raffle at balls after the midnight show. There are mostly utility items, food, clothing and vouchers to be won, as well as one or a few main prizes such as short vacations.
