life and work

Hipolit Cegielski was born as the son of Michał Cegielski and his wife Józefa. Palkowski born. The early death of his mother and the economic bankruptcy of his father quickly forced him to live his life independently. He attended high schools in Tremessen and Posen and then studied in Berlin , where he also received his doctorate in 1840. After graduating, he returned to Poznan and became a teacher at the Catholic Mariengymnasium . In addition to his work as a teacher, he published linguistic and didactic publications scientific treatises, including “O słowie polskim i koniugacjach jego” (On Polish Vocabulary and Conjugation), “Gramatyka języka greckiego” (a textbook for Greek grammar) and “Nauka poezji” (poetry).

During the riots in 1846 , he refused to carry out checks on his students' private rooms, which resulted in his discharge from high school. Out of necessity, with the help of his friends, he founded a business for agricultural equipment in connection with a metal workshop. Thanks to his efficiency and business acumen , his company H. Cegielski - Poznań grew and developed excellently, which later his son Stephan Cegielski developed and managed. In addition to his business activities, he continued to publish books, founded the daily newspaper “Gazeta Polska” in 1848 and “Dziennik Poznański” in 1859, wrote articles for the magazine “Goniec Polski” and devoted himself to political and social tasks. In 1849 he was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives and later a member of the Poznan City Council. He was also a co-founder and active promoter of several scientific and economic societies (including Towarzystwo Pomocy Naukowej, Towarzystwo Przemysłowe, Centralne Towarzystwo Gospodarcze, Poznan Society of Friends of Science ).
