Poznańskie Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Nauk or Poznan Society of Friends of Science , PTPN for short, is a non-profit association that was founded on February 13, 1857 by 42 founding members in Poznan .

history

The aim of the company was to protect and promote Polish culture and science . August Cieszkowski became the first president of the society . The originally planned humanistic and artistic profile of the company quickly expanded to include the natural sciences. They researched, made contacts, exchanged ideas with other scientific institutions and the like. a. from Warsaw , Krakow , Lemberg , Petersburg , Berlin , Prague , Olomouc , Belgrade , Charkow and Copenhagen and published its own specialist journals .

Until the PAU , the Academy of Learning , was founded in Cracow in 1872 , the PTPN was the main cultural and scientific organization of all parts of Poland and then of the Prussian part. In addition to scientific activity, the society collected Polish works of art and saved them for posterity. In 1919 the PTPN was one of the founding initiators of the Poznań Piast University .

Today the society has about a thousand members from all over Poland, but mainly scientists from the Poznan universities and institutes, who meet regularly and frequently in specialist commissions and at symposia.
