Friedrich Karl von Hardenberg
Friedrich Karl von Hardenberg (born January 6, 1696 at Hardenberg Castle ; † May 24, 1763 ) was a Hanoverian diplomat , war president and garden architect .
Life
Hardenberg came from the Lower Saxon noble family of Hardenberg . He was the son of Christian Ludwig von Hardenberg (1663–1736) and Catharina Sybille Freiin von Dörnberg (1669–1767), was a Hanoverian Privy Councilor and Real Privy Councilor . His younger brothers were Field Marshal Christian Ludwig von Hardenberg and Privy Councilor August Ulrich von Hardenberg and the officers Hans Christoph (1703–1747) and Georg Wilhelm (1705–1774).
In 1741 Hardenberg became the Oberhof building and gardening director of Herrenhausen near Hanover and was in charge of the design of the famous Herrenhausen Gardens .
From 1747 to 1750, the architect Johann Paul Heumann built the Hardenbergsche Haus, named after him, for Hardenberg on the spot where the garden designer Martin Charbonnier's building had previously stood.
“For more than 35 years, 22 of which he was solely responsible, he has administered this office without even mentioning his work in the literature. This can be explained by the fact that only a few files relating to Hardenberg's work as building and gardening director have survived, and the actual scope of this work and also the question of whether the decisions made were mainly based on his suggestions or the monarch are largely in the dark remains."
In 1751 he was elected honorary member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .
