First round draft picks

All first-round draft picks from the NFL draft that the Cowboys have made since their first draft in 1961 are listed below. Although the Cowboys were founded as a new expansion team as early as 1960 , they could not participate in the NFL Draft until 1961, because they had registered too late for the 1960 draft. In order to still be competitive against the other teams, an NFL expansion draft was instead carried out on March 13, 1960 . In this draft, the Cowboys, who at the time still carried the Rangers name, selected 36 players from the 12 existing teams. Previously, the NFL teams had each selected nine players, from which the cowboys could choose three.

The Cowboys have so far been able to select the overall first in the NFL Draft three times (1974, 1989 and 1991).
