William Dexter Coakley (* 20th October 1972 in Charleston , South Carolina ) is a former American American football poker players. He played a total of ten seasons as linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys and St. Louis Rams in the National Football League (NFL).

college

Coakley played college football at Appalachian State University for their football team, the Appalachian State Mountaineers. In his first season, he was named Southern Conference Freshman of the Year . In 1995 and 1996 he was the first and so far (as of 2018) only player to win the Buck Buchanan Award twice , which is given to the best defender in Division I-AA . In addition, he was voted All-American three times . With 616 tackles , he scored the second most in the history of the Southern Conference. In 2011, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as the first Mountaineers player .

Coakley was selected in the third round of the 1997 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys . He quickly developed into a starter, where he replaced Darrin Smith , who was hired by the Philadelphia Eagles , in the position of Weakside Linebacker . In his first season he was elected to the all- rookie team , later three nominations for the Pro Bowl followed. In the middle of the 2001 season he missed his only game as a result of a knee injury. During his time with the Cowboys, he played in 127 games from the start. St. Louis Rams

After the Cowboys prematurely dissolved Coakley's contract, the St. Louis Rams signed him on March 3, 2005 . He received a five-year contract that him a salary of 14.5 million US dollars assured.
