Up with people

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Up with People is a US non-profit educational organization founded in 1965 , which, similar to the Sing-Out -Revue, can be traced back to the Moral Re-Armament (MRA, German: moral rearmament) movement.

Up with People is best known for its music shows, which feature between 70 and 100 young people between the ages of 18 and 29 from up to 20 different countries. During these “casts” the group travels at least three continents for one or two semesters to take part in public life, provide social support and perform their music show. Such a trip lasted a whole year up to the year 2000. Back then there were five “casts” a year, each starting in January (one group) and July (four groups).

The students live with host families during their time with Up with People . On the one hand, the show serves to thank the host families for their hospitality. On the other hand, the students proclaim their (non-religious) message in the form of music and point out social, ethical, cultural and other problems, but also opportunities for humanity. The music should be used as an international language that everyone understands.

The organization is based in Denver , USA . The European headquarters are in Brussels . J. Blanton Belk is considered to be the founder. After the program was discontinued in 2000, it was restarted in 2004 under the new name “WorldSmart”. But soon the well-known name Up with People was used again.

The groups appeared in 1976, 1980, 1982, and 1986 in the halftime show of the Super Bowl and in 1972 at the Olympic Games in Munich. There have been appearances in Saturday evening shows on West German television since the 1970s and 1980s . Under its own music label Up With People! Records were released until 1998 sound carriers.

The Simpsons episode Selma wants a baby shows an appearance by the group Hooray for Everything as a reference to Up with People .

In 2009 the documentary Smile 'Til It Hurts: The Up with People Story by director Lee Storey was released. The film documents the history of the group from its origins in the late 1950s. He works out that the group, whose founding was supported by companies like Halliburton , General Motors , Exxon and Searle , was conceived as a counter-movement to hippie culture . Despite some criticism of the organization's religious roots, its politically conservative message and its simple-minded music, according to a review by the New York Village Voice , he portrayed those involved with respect for their good intentions.
