The Twelve Months is a 1956 Soviet cartoon by Ivan Ivanov-Wano and Mikhail Botov .

action

A young girl was sent into the forest by her stepmother to fetch wood. While doing so, she meets a soldier of the queen who tells her about one of his ancestors how he met once every twelve months on New Year's Eve. He helps her collect brushwood and tells about the queen, the orphan and the same age as the girl. In thanks for the help, the girl shows the soldier the most beautiful fir tree in the forest, which he should cut for the queen.

The headstrong queen is taught by a professor and terrorizes her environment. On a whim, she demands that they bring her snowdrops on New Year's Eve. Anyone who can bring a basket of snowdrops, she promises to fill the basket with gold. The girl's stepmother and stepsister also hope for the gold and send the girl back to the forest to collect snowdrops as soon as she comes back from the forest half frozen with the wood. In a heavy snowstorm, she discovers a group of men around a campfire who turn out to be the twelve months. At first they are amused that she is looking for snowdrops at the wrong time of year, but touched by her story, the twelve months let snowdrops bloom so that the girl can collect her flowers. When they say goodbye, they give her a ring with which she can call for help during the twelve months if she otherwise keeps the secret of her whereabouts to herself.

For the basket with snowdrops, the stepmother and her daughter receive the gold. However, the queen wants to see the place in the forest where the snowdrops grow. They send the girl back into the forest, ostensibly to get more snowdrops. The stepsister to mark the way behind. When the queen meets the girl in the forest, she refuses to tell her the secret of where the snowdrops were found. A dispute ensues about the ring of the twelve months. The queen throws the ring on a frozen lake and the girl calls the twelve months.

A snowstorm begins a series of consecutive seasons that fascinate and shock the queen and her entourage. The eldest of the twelve months equips the girl with splendid clothes, a sleigh and a troika . Together they drive - the girl, the queen purified in her arrogance, her teacher and the soldier - back from the forest.
