Ivan Petrovich Ivanov-Vano ( Russian Иван Петрович Иванов-Вано * 27 . Jul / 8. February  1900 . Greg in Moscow ; † 25. March 1987 ) was a Soviet animated film - director , screenwriter and artistic director .

Life and accomplishments

Ivan Ivanov-Wano was born into a peasant family who had moved to Moscow from the Kaluga governorate . He graduated to 1923 studying at Vkhutemas where Ilya Mashkov was his teacher. Initially he wanted to become a book and magazine illustrator, but in the autumn of 1924 , thanks to his childhood friend Vladimir Suteev , he went to the Moscow film school , where other Wchutemas graduates such as Nikolai Petrovich Khodataev, Yuri Alexandrovich Merkulov and Senon Komissarenko also studied.

In 1925 Ivanov-Wano was involved as an animator in Китай в огне ( Kitai w ogne ), the first Soviet animated film. Two years later he co-directed for the first time; together with Merkulow and Daniil Jakowlewitsch Tscherkes arose Сенька-африканец ( Senka-afrikanez ). The screenplay is based on templates by Kornei Tschukowski , the processing of folkloric motifs and the fixation on a younger audience represented a premiere for the animation film genre in the USSR. This orientation was to be groundbreaking for Ivanov-Wano's further career. In 1936 he went to the Soyuzmultfilmstudio , where the vast majority of his works were created. Three years later he, Boris Wladimirowitsch Dubrowski-Eschke, Fyodor Semjonowitsch Bogorodski and S. Koslowski founded their own department within the Moscow Film School , which at that time was officially called the State All-Union Institute for Cinematography . Ivanov-Wano led the training of directors for animated films, and since 1952 he has held the title of professor. His students included Alina Alexejewna Speschnewa, who animated films for Roman Katschanow , Francesca Alfredowna Yarbusova, Sergei Alexandrowitsch Alimow and Stanislaw Michailowitsch Sokolow. Also Yuri Norstein worked together in the early phase of his career with Ivanov-Vano. Although his way of working had a great influence on his students, he had a reputation for always promoting their independence and individual creativity.

In 1960 Ivanov-Wano moved within the film studio to the department for puppet cartoons.

Over a period of more than 50 years Ivanov-Wano was involved in 42 films as a director, wrote 26 screenplays and appeared five times as artistic director. Many of his works were based on known models as Три мушкетёра ( Tri muschketjora , 1938) by Alexandre Dumas ' The Three Musketeers , Конёк-горбунок ( Konjok-gorbunok , 1947 and 1975 ) by Pyotr Jerschows eponymous literary fairy tales , Гуси-Лебеди ( Gusi-Lebedi , 1949) based on the folk tale Wild swans , the Schneewitchen -Adaption Сказка о мертвой царевне и о семи богатырях ( Skaska o mertwoi zarewne uo semi bogatyrjach , 1951), Снегурочка ( Snegurochka , 1952), Приключения Буратино ( Prikljutschenija Buratino , 1959) on the basis of by Alexei Tolstoy Burattino , Как один мужик двух генералов прокормил ( Kak odin muzhik dwuch Generalov prokormil , 1965) by Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin's eponymous story and Tsar Saltan and the Magic island ( Skaske o czars Saltane , 1984) after Pushkin's the tale of Tsar Saltan . Together with Mikhail Alexandrovich Botov, he also produced a film for the World Festival of Youth and Students in 1957 with Песня о дружбе ( Pesnja o druschbe ) . One of his greatest works, however, is Левша ( Levscha , 1964), a film adaptation of Nikolai Leskov's Der Linkhander . The project was prepared over a period of 30 years before Ivanov-Wano considered it feasible in his sense. Juri Norstein, himself also an expert on folkloric topics, was involved here as an animator. Many of Ivanov-Wano's works are classics and have also found international distribution. However, German-language versions have so far only been produced by The Twelve Months (1956), The Hunchback Horse (1975) and Zar Saltan and the Wonder Island (1984).

In addition to his cinematic work, Ivanov-Wano, who had belonged to the CPSU since 1951 , was also the author of Рисованный фильм ( Risowanny film ), a book about animated films. In 1980 he published his autobiography Кадр за кадром ( Kadr sa kadrom ).

Ivanov-Wano died at the age of 87 in his hometown and was buried in the Novodevichy cemetery .

Ivanov-Wano was named Honored Artist of the RSFSR in 1957 , followed by the titles People's Artist of the RSFSR and People's Artist of the USSR in 1969 and 1985 .
