On Free Feet (Original title: Le Soupirant ) is a French comedy film by Pierre Étaix from 1962. In France and Germany, the film was released in 1963. The film was released on German television under the title Der Verehrer .

action

Pierre is no longer a very young man, but he still lives with his parents and dreams his way into space from his room. When he clogged his ears, annoyed by the piano playing by the au pair girl Ilka, his father asked him to finally find a wife. After a brief irritation about this request, Pierre sets out into the world and begins to learn the tricks men try to make an impression on women. But since he is not always particularly skilled, he only experiences failures at first. In a nightclub he finally meets the drunken Laurence, a neighbor of his, who quickly turns out to be an extremely demanding pain in the ass.

He then discovers Stella, a celebrated chanson singer, on television. She becomes his dream woman, and he gets all the footage of her that he can get hold of. His whole room is decorated over and over with the images of Stella. When Stella appears in town, Pierre tries to visit her backstage. After messing up the whole vaudeville troupe looking for the right wardrobe, he learns that Stella has a son. He makes off quickly.

Ilka packs her things. She will return to her homeland. When she says goodbye to Pierre, the two realize that they love each other, even if they don't speak the same language. He catches up with her before she takes the train.

background

Due to a dispute over the film rights, Pierre Étaix's films could not be shown for years. In 2010 the director's works were restored under his supervision. As a filmmaker, he was almost forgotten at the time.

Reviews

“The story of an unworldly young man looking for a bride offers the opportunity for a variety of imaginative gags, which, however, only aim at the effect. For lovers of grotesque entertainment. "

“Here's a smart and skillful companion making a modern sound film comedy in a style that is heavily influenced by silent film. Everything in this story, every gag, the simple plot and also the ending is in the tradition of a great silent film comedy. "

Awards

On Free Feet was awarded the Louis Delluc Prize for Best Film in 1962 . In 1963 the film was shown in the competition for the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival .
