Player career

college

Tuinei played high school in Hawaii before joining the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) for two years . He spent the last two years of his studies at the University of Hawaii . Emmitt Smith

NFL

In 1983 he was discovered by the then head coach of the Cowboys, Tom Landry , during a trial training session. In contrast to college, Tuinei was also used as an offensive tackle. The first few years with the cowboys did not bring Tuinei much success. The Cowboys turned out to be one of the worst teams in the NFL. From 1988 everything should change for Tuinei. Tom Landry was sacked as coach and the Cowboys' new owner, Jerry Jones , hired Jimmy Johnson as new head coach. Both had the vision of strengthening the team with young, success-hungry players. The wide receiver Alvin Harper , the fullback Daryl Johnston , the tight end Jay Novacek , the quarterback Troy Aikman and the offensive tackle Erik Williams were signed as rookies or by other clubs . In addition, wide receiver Michael Irvin , who has been playing with the Cowboy since 1988, managed to overcome a cruciate ligament tear . The running back Emmitt Smith became the best ball carrier NFL history. As an offensive tackle, Tuinei had the task of blocking his way into the opposing end zone and protecting Aikman from attacks by the opposing defense . The Cowboys became the dominant football team of the 1990s.

Tuinei and his team won the Super Bowl three times - after the 1992 season in Super Bowl XXVII against the Buffalo Bills with 52:17, after the season in 1993 in Super Bowl XXVII again against the team from Buffalo with 30:13 and after the season 1995 in Super Bowl XXX against the Pittsburgh Steelers with 27:17.

Tuinei, who appeared in 195 regular season games , ended his career with the Cowboys in 1997.

Honors

Tuinei played twice in the Pro Bowl , the selection game of the best players of the season. He was also voted All Pro twice . He is a member of the Dallas Cowboys All Star Team and the Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame .

After the career

Tuinei probably died of a heroin - overdose before he could take a coach station. He is buried in the Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery in Kaneohe , Hawaii.
