NFL

In 1991 he was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in 70th place in the third round of the 1991 NFL Draft . The Cowboys were then a team that moved in the middle of the table. The owner of the cowboys Jerry Jones and the trainer Jimmy Johnson had already had the plan to supplement the team with young, success-hungry players for a long time. To this end, star players such as running back Herschel Walker were given up, thereby collecting draft rights.

As rookies , and among other things have been committed by other clubs wide receiver Alvin Harper , the fullback Daryl Johnston , the tight end Jay Novacek and quarterback Troy Aikman . The offensive guard Nate Newton developed into the best player in his position. In addition, wide receiver Michael Irvin, who has been playing with the Cowboys since 1988, managed to overcome a cruciate ligament rupture and develop into one of the best passport recipients of all time. With Emmitt Smith it was also possible to sign the best running back of all time. The defense around Jim Jeffcoat was strengthened to a bulwark with players like Russell Maryland , Leon Lett and Chad Hennings . The Cowboys became the dominant football team of the 1990s.

Together with his pre-blockers Johnston, Mark Tuinei and Williams, Smith made a perfect offensive weapon. Smith succeeded again and again in blocking the way into the end zone of the opposing team. Williams distinguished himself with hard blocks, often directed against the opponent's head. Smith's willpower, his running dynamics, his ability to spot gaps in the opposing defense , his perfect timing then did the rest. Williams also showed uncompromising toughness when protecting his own quarterback.

Williams and his team won the American championship in professional football three times - the Super Bowl - in the 1992/93 Super Bowl XXVII final against the Buffalo Bills with 52:17, and again in the 1993/94 Super Bowl XXVIII final against the team from Buffalo with 30:13 and in the 1995/96 Super Bowl XXX final against the Pittsburgh Steelers with 27:17.

Williams moved to the Baltimore Ravens in 2001 . He ended his career there after five games. He played in 141 games for the Cowboys.

Off the field

Williams, like many of his teammates, had come into conflict with the law from time to time. In 1994 he missed numerous games because he was seriously injured in a self-inflicted traffic accident . He is said to have been drunk while driving. In 1996 he and his teammate Irvin were charged with sexual abuse. A woman's complaint later turned out to be a lie. She herself was convicted, Williams and Irvin were not prosecuted.

In 1997 Williams was named one of the league's most unfair players by The Sports Illustrated magazine .

Honors

Williams played in the Pro Bowl four times, in 1993, 1996, 1997 and 1999.
