Hennings was trained as a pilot , flew an A-10 Thunderbolt and was then stationed in England and Turkey . Hennings also flew missions in the Iraq war . In 1992 he would then be given the opportunity to terminate his contract. As planned by the cowboys, he joined them.

Professional time

In 1988 Hennings was committed by the Dallas Cowboys in the eleventh round to 290th place in the 1988 NFL Draft . This late signing first made it clear that his football career would not last very long. Top players are usually signed at the beginning of the draft. One reason for Hennings to prefer a secure career in the military and not to force his dismissal. Hennings' football career began correspondingly slowly.

In 1988 the Cowboys were bought by Jerry Jones . After the dismissal of coach Tom Landry , he hired Jimmy Johnson as the new head coach. The goal of the two men was to build the team of the Cowboys, who were the worst team in the NFL at the time, into a top team by hiring young players hungry for success. By handing over top running back Herschel Walker to the Minnesota Vikings , draft rights were acquired and investments were made in acquiring new players. Over the next few years, numerous key players were hired as rookies or by other clubs - the pass recipient Alvin Harper , the halfback Emmitt Smith , the fullback Daryl Johnston , the quarterback Troy Aikman , the tight end Jay Novacek or the offensive tackle Erik Williams . In addition, wide receiver Michael Irvin, who has been playing with the Cowboy since 1988, managed to overcome a cruciate ligament rupture . Jim Jeffcoat , who had been playing with the Cowboys for a long time, and Safety Darren Woodson , who was signed up in 1992, helped make the defense a bulwark. Hennings did his part. In 1992, at the age of 27 for a rookie, he too began his professional career. The Cowboys became the dominant football team of the 1990s.

Hennings' main task was to prevent the opposing running backs from advancing. In numerous game situations he was also used as a pass defender and should put pressure on the opposing quarterback. Throughout his career, he got 28 sacks and six fumbles . He was even able to use one for a touchdown for his team.

Hennings won with the Cowboys a total of three times the American championship in professional football - the Super Bowl - in the 1992/93 Super Bowl XXVII final against the Buffalo Bills with 52:17, in the 1993/94 Super Bowl XXVIII final again against the team from Buffalo with 30:13 and in the 1995/96 Super Bowl XXX final against the Pittsburgh Steelers with 27:17.

In 2001 he ended his career after nine years. He played exclusively for the Cowboys team.

Honors

Hennings is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame . He won the Outland Trophy in 1987 , the award for the best college player of a year in the position of defensive lineman.
