By 1984 he caught there passes for a space gain of 1536 yards and scored ten touchdowns . He set a national record for the highest average of space gained per pass catch (22.6 yards) with a tight end in one season (1984). Novacek was also a good track and field athlete , finishing fourth in the decathlon at the national college championships in 1984 . The NFL scouts quickly became aware of him.

NFL

In 1985 he was selected by the Arizona Cardinals , who were then still based in St. Louis , in the sixth round in 158th place in the 1985 NFL Draft . The relatively late signing made it clear that Novacek's capabilities were not valued too highly. In his first two years he hardly got any playing time. It was only in the third year that he was increasingly used and was able to achieve a total of eight touchdowns for his team in the following three years.

In 1990 Novaceks was signed by one of the NFL's worst teams, the Dallas Cowboys . Novacek developed into an important part of the offense there . The owner of the Cowboys, Jerry Jones , and the team's head coach , Jimmy Johnson , signed more young, success-hungry players during this period. As rookies among others were, or from other clubs obliged wide receiver Alvin Harper , the halfback Emmitt Smith , the fullback Daryl Johnston , the quarterback Troy Aikman and offensive tackle Erik Williams . In addition, wide receiver Michael Irvin , who has been playing with the Cowboy since 1988, overcame a cruciate ligament tear . Jim Jeffcoat , who had been playing with the Cowboys for a long time, and Darren Woodson , who was later engaged, helped to make a bulwark out of the defense . A pre-eminent athlete , Novacek became one of those key players among the Cowboys as a pass taker and blocker .

The number of excellent attacking players among the Cowboys made them difficult to calculate. Novacek scored 28 touchdowns for the Cowboys in the regular season and during the play-offs . He was also used as a blocker for Emmitt Smith. Together with Daryl Johnston and the offensive line , Novacek succeeded again and again in blocking Smith's way into the end zone. Novacek won the Super Bowl three times with the Cowboys - after the regular season of the 1992 season in Super Bowl XXVII against the Buffalo Bills with 52:17. Novacek scored a touchdown in the game and was able to catch seven passes with a gain of 72 yards , in the 1993 season in Super Bowl XXVIII again against the team from Buffalo at 30:13 and in the 1995 season in Super Bowl XXX against the Pittsburgh Steelers with 27:17. Also in this game Novacek managed to get a touchdown. He caught a total of five passes for a gain of 50 yards. After the last Super Bowl, Novacek ended his career.
