Gen Urobuchi

Gen Urobuchi ( Japanese 虚 淵 玄 , Urobuchi Gen ; born December 20, 1972 in Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese scenario and screenwriter .

Life

Gen Urobuchi is the son of the voice actress Natsuko Sebata (* 1946) and the actor Shū Wada (* 1938), who in turn is the son of the crime writer and translator of ETA Hoffmann's horror novel The Sandman into Japanese Sunao Ōtsubo (actually Rokurō Wada; 1904-1965) . He studied at the Wakō University .

Influenced by the published in 1996, influential eroge - Adventures (interactive novels with pornographic scenes) Shizuku and Kizuato the manufacturer Leaf , he decided himself as an author in this area to act. Together with others, he founded the company Nitroplus ( Nitro + ), which specializes in such games, in 2000 , and he works as its chief scenario writer.

His debut work was the game Phantom - Phantom of Inferno from 2000, for which he designed the concept, wrote and directed the complete scenario himself. The game was a success, and two adult adaptations followed, in which he was also involved: a three-part OVA Phantom - Phantom the Animation in 2004 and - unusual for such games - a 26-part television series Phantom - Requiem for the Phantom .

Gen Urobuchi was also influenced by HP Lovecraft , as well as the role-playing game Call of Cthulhu , which was particularly reflected in his game Saya no Uta . This game is about a boy who, after a brain operation, only perceives the world as flesh, blood and intestines and people as grotesque maggots, with the exception of the eponymous "girl" Saya. The works he wrote are mostly of a gloomy nature, which, according to his own statement, is the result that he always regards "good" and "bad" as equal and on an equal footing and therefore the plot should be designed in such a way that actually each of both sides could win.

Together with Type-Moon he developed Fate / Zero , a prequel for Fate / stay night , for which he wrote the self-published light novels (illustrated novels). The first volume of this light novel appeared at Comiket 71 on December 29, 2006. The four volumes in total resulted in a television adaptation in 2011 as well as a new edition in six volumes by the Seikaisha publishing house .

A great success of Urobuchi in 2011 was the anime Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magika , which he developed together with Akiyuki Shimbō , Ume Aoki and Shaft . Urobuchi wrote the complete script for all episodes and received the award for best script at the Tōkyō Kokusai Anime Fair 2012. The series became the anime with the highest-selling Blu-Rays in the week of its release and won the Best TV Series Award at the Animation Kobe event . She also received three movie adaptations in 2012 and 2013, for which he also wrote the script.

After director Motohiro Madoka saw Magika , he hired Urobuchi to write the plot and scripts for Psycho-Pass from 2012. In the same year he also developed the plot for the series Suisei no Gargantia , which was broadcast in 2013. From 2013 to 2014 one of the screenwriters of the Tokusatsu series was Kamen Rider Gaim and wrote the screenplay for the movie Rakuen Tsuihō - Expelled from Paradise . He also designed the basic plot for the anime series Aldnoah.Zero . In 2017 he wrote the script for the planned anime film trilogy for the Godzilla series, the first title of which, Gojira: Kaijū Wakusei, is due to be released in November 2017.
