Saya no Uta ( Japanese 沙耶 の 唄 , dt. "Saya's song") is an Adventure - Erogē by Nitroplus with horror elements and thus also belongs to the Eroguro genre (erotic grotesque ). The plot of the game comes from Gen Urobuchi .

action

Fuminori Sakisaka is a young medical student whose life changed when he was involved in a traffic accident in which his parents died and he was left seriously injured. Fuminori underwent experimental brain surgery to save his life, but the surgery had an unexpected side effect - a form of agnosia developed , which caused his senses to become "distorted". He perceives the world as a hellish nightmare with black skies and buildings covered with pulsing flesh, where all streets and building interiors are splattered with blood, gigantic organs and cartilage tissue. Ordinary people appear to him as grotesque, giant larvae-like monsters with a hideous stench. Even the food he's trying now tastes utterly gross.

While contemplating suicide in the hospital, Fuminori encounters a beautiful, human-looking girl amidst the pulsating walls of flesh. She introduces herself as Saya and explains that she is looking for her father. Fuminori does not want to be separated from her and offers her to live with him, which she accepts.

As Fuminori sees ordinary things as monstrously depraved abominations, ordinary people are able to see that Saya is actually a disgusting creature from another universe. It was rarely seen by anyone except Fuminori, and those who saw it were killed and consumed by it immediately, generally only after they went mad about its disgusting appearance. Their true form, which is never shown directly but only described in the text, is externally similar to the deformed slimy monstrosities that haunt Fuminori's world. The ultimate goal of their life is to distribute their life form in this universe by transforming the native life form with the highest degree of intelligence: humans. She learned all about humanity from her "father," an exalted biomedical scientist named Masahiko Ōgai, the first person to interact with Saya. She finds out that the motive of human reproduction is "love" and that the process is carried out by women. Consequently, she regards herself as a girl looking for “love” in preparation for final procreation. However, due to her disgusting appearance, she had no chance of success - until she met Fuminori.

After her first contact, her "father", died, she stayed in the hospital to continue her research and to look for the next relationship with someone, which unfortunately ended in a horror story about the hospital. Fuminori's experience provides her with a chance to learn the skills to manipulate people's brains and bodies.

The truth emerges when Fuminori comes home to see Saya eating the slime-covered corpse of Ōmi, a girl he knows. Her remains appear as a yellow-green jelly-like thing in Fuminori's eyes. Fuminori describes the smell and consistency as "smelling of herbs, apparently a variety of juicy fruits". When he tries it, he finds the taste of human flesh, due to his twisted senses, delicious.

end up

The game has three different endings depending on the decisions the player makes during the game.

Characters

Fuminori Sakisaka ( 匂 坂 郁 紀 , Sakisaka Fuminori )
Speaker: Hikaru Midorikawa
The protagonist of the game. A medical student who suffered a near-fatal traffic accident that killed his parents and permanently affected his perception of life. As he wades through a “mad world” of flesh and blood, he seeks the affection of the only person he considers normal - a mysterious girl named Saya, with whom he falls madly in love. Over time, under the influence of Saya, Fuminori looks at ordinary people with apathetic disdain and is ready to kill others without remorse. Saya and later Yō are excluded. As events progress, he gradually becomes a ruthless cannibal who, through his disturbed senses, finds human flesh delicious.
Saya ( 沙耶 , Saya )
Speaker: Naoko Takano
Saya is a living being from another dimension that materialized in this universe for the sole purpose of reproduction. She has no memory of where she came from and is guided only by her instincts. Corresponding to Fuminori's illness, she appears to him as a young girl in a white dress, although she is actually a kind of amorphous, smelly creature with tentacles. It hunts for creatures of all sizes, from cats to humans, typically killing by breaking their necks and then eating their internal organs. She is able to secrete a strong acid that she uses in part to digest her food. Its true form is never fully revealed as it kills and consumes watchers instantly. The little information about their real form in the game is vague and never goes into detail.
Tonoo Kōji ( 佐 倉 瀬 津 美 , Sakura Setsumi )
Speaker: Yasunori Matsumoto
Fuminori's friend. After Fuminori's accident, he tried to restore Fuminori to a normal life. When he is nearly killed by Fuminori and learns the truth about Fuminori's real character, Kōji confronts Fuminori directly with his actions and tries to kill him.
Takahata Ōmi ( 高 畠 青海 , Takahata Ōmi )
Speaker: Hyo-sei
Kōji's girlfriend and Yō's best friend. After Fuminori's accident, she became alarmed for the sake of Yōs. When Fuminori openly rejects Yō, Ōmi goes to Fuminori's house to research. In the house Ōmi is killed by Saya. It is consumed by Saya and Fuminori.
Yō Tsukuba ( 津 久 葉 瑶 )
Speaker: Mio Yasuda
A friend of Fuminoris who secretly loves him. She has been worried and grieved since his accident when Fuminori's character changes too.
Ryōko Tanbo ( 丹 保 凉子 )
Speaker: Mitsuki Saiga
The doctor responsible for Fuminori's constitution. She becomes skeptical that Fuminori is hiding something from her during her routine checkups after he has recovered from his injuries in the hospital.

Production notes

publication

The game was developed by Nitroplus and published on CD-ROM in Japan on December 26, 2003, with the scenario and script by Gen Urobuchi , who was inspired by HP Lovecraft's Cthulhu myth . The success of Urobuchi's dark anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica meant that almost 10 years later the game was again in high demand.

A new edition took place on July 31, 2009 as part of the best-of series Nitro The Best! .

On February 24, 2009, a fan-created translation patch was released that translated an installation of the original version of the game into English. However, this was removed in the same year after the publisher JAST USA announced that it would work with the fan group on translations of Nitrolus games. In July 2011, the official announcement of the English localization followed, which was published on May 6, 2013.

On April 17, 2014, there was an adaptation for mobile phones with Android operating system (version 2.3.3 or higher) distributed via Visual Art’s App Store Anigema .
