Black Lagoon ( Japanese ブ ラ ッ ク ・ ラ グ ー ン , Burakku Ragūn ) is a manga series by the Japanese artist Rei Hiroe . The action-oriented manga, which first appeared in 2001 and can be assigned to his genre, was filmed as an anime series.

action

Office worker Rokuro Okajima is supposed to ship an important diskette to Borneo for his Japanese company . He is attacked and taken hostage by the Lagoon Company , which works on behalf of the Russian Mafia . The group consists of the trigger-happy Revy, the African-American Dutch, who leads the group, and the technician Benny. After his company had him declared dead without further ado and Rokuro saw no reason to return to Japan, he joined the group and was given the nickname Rock .

The Lagoon Company smuggles with their speedboat , the Black Lagoon , in Southeast Asia and accepts orders from the Mafia and criminal syndicates, in particular the Russian syndicate Hotel Moscow , with which they have good connections. The boss of Hotel Moscow, the tough Balalaika, occasionally works hand in hand with them. The office is located in the fictional coastal city of Roanapur in Thailand . The characters spend the time between two assignments mainly in The Yellow Flag , a bar in Roanapur that is often razed to the ground by shootings. Revy and Benny grew up in New York, where Revy, who often shines with vulgar expressions, learned her skills at the pistol.

As the series progresses, the Lagoon Company faces a variety of organized crime threats such as: E.g. the Japanese Yakuza or the Chinese Triads , neo-Nazis , the radical Islamic Hezbollah militia, the American secret service CIA and a number of assassins . This framework also gives rise to a growing number of friendships with recurring characters, especially the nun Eda and the professional killer Shenhua (just called Miss Bitteschön by Revy ).

title

Just as the series title itself is English, all chapters and episodes - even in the Japanese original edition of the anime and manga - have English or German names (in Rōmaji script ). For example, the title of the fourth episode of the first anime series is The Return of the Eagle .

The manga was first published as a short story in issue 4/2001 on March 19, 2001 of the Japanese manga magazine Sunday Gene-X by the publisher Shogakukan . Since issue 5/2002 on April 19, 2002, a new chapter of the series has been published in Sunday Gene-X every month. The individual chapters appeared from December 2002 in 11 edited volumes.
