prehistory

In 1972, the Apollo 17 space mission discovered a hypergate on the far side of the moon , through which humanity began to colonize Mars . The colonists, led by Doctor Rayregalia Vers Rayvers, discovered ancient ruins with a far superior technology called Aldnoah . A conflict arose between the settlers and the earth about their monopoly of use, as a result of which in 1985 Mars declared itself independent as the Empire Vers ( ヴ ァ ー ス帝国 , Vāsu Teikoku ). In the wake of this potential threat, the earth ended the Cold War and formed a world state. The Second Emperor of Vers Gillsaia declared war on Earth in 1999, with the Hypergate spiraling out of control and pulverizing half the moon as the fighting progressed. The lunar chunks falling on the earth wreaked havoc, especially in North and South America, which lost around half of their land mass due to massive impact craters. Since this Heaven's Fall ("Himmelssturz") killed not only 50% of the earth's population but also the Emperor von Vers, both sides concluded an armistice. After the death of his son Gillsaias, Rayregalia took over the imperial title again. Cut off from Mars, the 37 "Martian Knights" ( 火星 騎士 , kasei kishi ) - people who received the power of Aldnoah from the emperor and who represent the nobility in the empire - remained in earth orbit. Through the power of the Aldnoah they can control 'Mechs called cataphracts based on ancient Mars technology, which are far superior to all earth weapons, but also have huge battle stations called “landing castles” ( 揚 陸 城 , yōrikujō ) and maintain their own independent armies. On Earth, in addition to reconstruction, the development of their own, albeit more primitive, 'Mechs began in anticipation of a new war, and compulsory military training was introduced in schools.

Serial plot

season 1

Episode 1 15 years after Heaven's Fall , the Emperor's granddaughter, Princess Asseylum Vers Allusia, decides to visit Earth to improve relationships, which is due in particular to the influence of Slaine Troyard, who originally came from Earth. This in turn met with criticism from the Martian Knights, especially the Counts Saazbaum and Cruhteo. During the princess's welcome parade, which is also attended by student Inaho Kaizuka and his friends, terrorists attack her convoy, killing everyone. In retaliation, the Martian knights arbitrarily declare war on earth.

Episode 2 By disrupting global communications and their superior weapon technology, especially their cataphracts, they quickly gain the upper hand. On the way to an evacuation transporter, Inaho meets two girls who are convinced that the princess was not in the convoy because she was sick due to the unfamiliar gravity of the earth and therefore took part in a double for her. He takes them both to an evacuation van that includes his friends. At the same time, the terrorists, who are actually moles of Mars, meet with Baron Trillram, who is indeed a subordinate of Saazbaum, but puffs himself up at Cruhteo. Instead of receiving their hoped-for reward, they are killed by it, whereby the girl Rayet Areash survives. Before he can get rid of this, the military arrives, with all weapons remaining ineffective as any matter and radiation that comes into contact with Trillram's cataphract Nilokeras dissolves. Inaho's sister Yuki Kaizuka receives an order from her superior Kōichirō Marito to bring the civilian Rayet to safety, where she just reaches Inaho's transporter. During the chase that followed, Inaho's friend Okisuke Mikuni was killed because the wind threw him against Trillram's cataphract. However, when they drive into a tunnel, Trillram suddenly stops chasing them.

Episode 3 In hiding, the two girls Inaho and Rayet tell that they are Princess Asseylum, who has holographically changed her appearance, and their maid Eddelrittuo, and ask him to find a way to tell the Martians their survival but their identity before the Martians to keep secret from others. Inaho later realizes that the nature of the invulnerability of the cataphract is also its greatest weakness: Since all radiation is dissolved, it has to be blind and rely on probes. In order to communicate with the probes in turn, part of the machine must be unprotected. Camouflaged by smoke grenades, through which the probes can only see gray, Inaho manages to lure Trillram onto a bridge in his training mech and destroy it. Trillram's cataphract then falls into the water and becomes visible at the point where the water is not dissolved, so that Inaho can destroy it. Slaine, who saw that the princess survived, shoots Trillram after Trillram tells him about the assassination plan.

Episode 4 Since Slaine assumes that Cruhteo is a co-conspirator based on the remarks made by Cruhteo, he tells him that Trillram died in the bombardment initiated by Saazbaum to cover up his tracks. Inaho and the other civilians as well as his sister and Marito are meanwhile on board the amphibious assault ship Wadatsumi under the command of Lieutenant Darzana Magbaredge for evacuation. The Wadatsumi is later attacked by the Martian knight Vlad, who is in the service of Cruhteos, in his cataphract Argyre , who is armed with a power sword . Inaho succeeds in damaging his cataphract, so that Vlad has to withdraw for the time being.

Episode 5 Cruhteo requests an audience with the Emperor von Vers in order to be able to investigate the circumstances of the death of the princess, whereupon the latter declares a temporary armistice against Saazbaum's protests. Ignoring this, Vlad wants to make amends for his shame from the last time and attacks the Wadatsumi again . Again, Inaho takes advantage of the fact that the strength of the energy sword is also his greatest weakness by shifting the fight to the ship, then trimming it on one side so that Argyre slides into the sea, whereby the water evaporates immediately upon contact with the energy sword and creates a steam explosion that destroys the Argyre . Meanwhile, Slaine secretly uses Cruhteo's audience chamber to inform the emperor that the princess has survived. It turns out, however, that Saazbaum had contacted the emperor shortly beforehand, saying that the terrestrial humans would try such a trick to enforce peace.

Episode 6 Slaine's maneuver is reversed in that the emperor, now convinced of the perfidy of the terrestrial people, officially declares war on earth. General mobilization is now being carried out there and all students are being drafted. The Wadatsumi arrives to replenish supplies on the island of Tanegashima , which was devastated 15 years ago in Heaven's Fall , and where Marito first came into contact with a cataphract, as a result of which his armored unit was destroyed and his best friend and Magbaredges brother perished. Marito has since been traumatized ( PTSD ) to fight a cataphract and drowned this, as well as that this first contact was kept secret and he was branded as a weirdo, in alcohol. On Tanegashima they meet Countess Femieanne with her Kataphrakt Hellas . Meanwhile, Saazbaum comes to the conclusion that Slaine's information regarding the death of Trillram may have been a lie and therefore intervenes with Cruhteo, who wants to have Slaine executed as a traitor, to take him alive.

Episode 7 Femieanne's Kataphrakt has several detachable arms that she can harden into a single molecule and use as remote-controlled missiles. Inaho and the others can hardly destroy them in this state, but they can distract them from the course by shelling them, later supported by the arriving Slaine in his aircraft, with whom Inaho initially allies as "enemy of his enemy". In the course of the fighting, there is a rock fall, in which a large artificial cave is exposed in the Magbaredge Wadatsumi brings for protection. There they discover the cataphract from 15 years ago and a flying battleship called the Deucalion , in which the Aldnoah drive of the cataphract was installed, which was obviously the reason for the cataphract being kept secret.

Episode 8 The princess reveals herself to Magbaredge and tells that the Aldnoah energy source can only be used by people with a special power. When her grandfather, the current emperor, found the ancient ruins, they recognized him as worthy and rewrote his genes so that he and his descendants can use the Aldnoah. He later passed this power on to the Martian knights. With the help of the princess, the Deucalion can now be operated and Femieanne defeated. Cruhteo captures and tortures Slaine to find out the reason for his betrayal. Since Slaine remains silent because he believes Cruhteo to be a co-conspirator, Cruhteo orders his execution. When Slaine drops the remark that Cruhteo will receive his just punishment from the princess, he realizes in connection with the appearance of the Deucalion that she is still alive. When asked about it, Cruhteo learns of Trillram's actions and sees through that there is a traitor among the Martian knights who is also behind the attack. He then wants to offer the earth a truce to expose the traitor. But before that happens, he is attacked by Saazbaum, the traitor, who kidnaps Slaine and destroys the base.

Episode 9 Magbaredge sets off with the Deucalion to the headquarters of the Earth Forces in Russia. Saazbaum tells Slaine that he spared his life because his father saved Saazbaum 15 years ago. He also reveals the motives for his plot. Merely to distract from internal problems and from an inferiority complex to the earth, Mars attacked the earth, with Orlane, Saazbaum's fiancée, perished. That is why he wanted to take revenge on the imperial family through the death of the princess and reform the empire through the war. Meanwhile, on board the Deucalion Rayet finds herself in an existential fear, because on the one hand, as a Martian after Trillram's betrayal, she now hates the Martians, but on the other hand also envies the princess for being able to reveal herself to Earth people. When she is alone with the princess, this discharges as she strangles the princess with her lucky charm amulet.

Episode 10 Since the Deucalion's energy source is switched off, Inaho quickly realizes that something has happened to Asseylum and can thus revive her in time. When Rayet is caught, she reveals herself as a Martian and her motives and accuses the princess of being primarily responsible for everything. The Deucalion finally arrives at the headquarters of the Earth Forces in Novostalsk, a gigantic Soviet underground complex. Asseylum gives a speech to announce their integrity and to call for a peace negotiation, which does not reach Mars because Saazbaum controls the relay station on the moon. Saazbaum explains to Slaine that the cataphract Deucalion belonged to his fiancée Orlane, with whom he formed the vanguard of the invasion 15 years ago. Shortly after their arrival, the moon exploded, killing Orlane. He releases Slaine, gives him the choice of joining him or Earth and starts an attack on Earth Headquarters with his Landeburg.

Episode 11 Saazbaum easily manages to penetrate the headquarters with his troops. However, he does not achieve his goal of killing the princess, as she can escape to the Deucalion with the help of Eddelrittuos and Rayets , who both remain behind. She informs Inaho that the Aldnoah drive of the landing castles or cataphracts is not only deactivated when the respective owner dies, but can also be forcibly switched off by a member of the imperial family. Inaho devises the plan to fly with the Deucalion into the stratosphere, drop the 'Mechs from above on the landing castle and after the air defense has been switched off, let the princess follow suit. While the first half is going according to plan, Saazbaum's cataphract Dioscuria suddenly appears and severely damages the Deucalion , which then rams the Landeburg to deliver the princess.

Episode 12 Saazbaum pursues this and Inaho stands to stop him while Yuki is supposed to bring the princess to the Aldnoah drive. Saazbaum's cataphract combines the abilities of the other cataphracts Inhao met before, but also their weaknesses, so that Inaho succeeds in damaging them badly. Slaine also reaches the Landeburg and penetrates to Cruhteo's cataphract Tharsis , who was recovered by Saazbaum, and unexpectedly activated, although this should not be because of Cruhteo's death. When Asseylum deactivates the drive and the Landeburg, Inaho also wants to give the now incapacitated Saazbaum the final blow, but is prevented from doing so by Slaine. When Asseylum rushes to Inaho's help, she is shot by Saazbaum, whereupon Slaine becomes enraged and first shoots Saazbaum and then shoots Inaho.

season 2

Episode 13 The second season takes place 19 months after the last battle in episode 12. Slaine fights the cataphract of the Terrans in the rubble of the moon. After that, it turns out that the princess, as well as Saazbaum, are alive. Frozen Elysium fights the Terrans with a freezing cataphract. Inaho manages to defeat the cataphract. Then follows a flashback in which it is shown that Inaho is saved by his friends. With the help of blood residue on his cheek, which came from the princess, the Aldnoah can be activated, allowing the Deucalion to fly to the base. At the end of this episode it is revealed that the princess, who now appears to be on the Martian side, is a different person. The princess is currently in a coma-like state and is visited by Slaine.

Anime

The production of the anime was announced by Nitro + on February 16, 2014 . The series was animated by A-1 Pictures in collaboration with Troyca, the animation studio founded by series director Ei Aoki a few months earlier . The basic structure of the plot was designed by Nitro + house writer Gen Urobuchi , who previously worked with Aoki on Fate / Zero . Based on its concept, the actual series script was written by Katsuhiko Takayama . Urobuchi also wrote the scripts for the first three episodes, while the remaining episodes were written by Takayama. The character design comes from Masako Matsumoto, who was also the animation director, based on the drafts of the illustrator Takako Shimura , who wrote the manga Hōrō Musuko , which was also filmed as an anime by Aoki. The 'Mechs, in turn, were designed by I-IV and Kenji Teraoka.

The motto of the series, with which the opening credits each end, is Let justice be done, though the heavens fall. , the English translation of the Latin saying Fiat iustitia, ruat caelum. (“Righteousness shall be done and when the heavens collapse”).

The first season with 12 episodes premiered on Tokyo MX , BS11 , Tochigi TV and Gunma TV from July 6 to September 21, 2014 at midnight (and thus on the previous TV day ) , followed by MBS two hours later and AT-X each two days later. The second season, also with 12 episodes, ran from January 11 to March 29, 2015.

In North America, the series was licensed by Aniplex of America, who stream it with English subtitles on YouTube (Aniplex Channel), Daisuki, Hulu and Crunchyroll as a simulcast . The latter stream in North and South America, Australia, New Zealand and Europe, with the exception of German-speaking countries. The anime was licensed for German-speaking countries by Kazé Germany , who released it in the first half of 2015.

Manga

At the same time as the anime, a manga is being created that will be drawn by Pinakes. This is published by Hōbunsha and does not appear, as is usual for manga, first chapter by chapter in magazines, but directly as an anthology ( Tankōbon ). The four volumes were published on August 11, 2014 ( ISBN 978-4-8322-4469-6 ), November 12, 2014 ( ISBN 978-4-8322-4495-5 ), March 12, 2015 ( ISBN 978-4- 8322-4525-9 ) and July 13, 2015 ( ISBN 978-4-8322-4590-7 ). There is also another volume drawn by Bampaku Fuyuno, which is a prologue to the second season, from February 12, 2015 ( ISBN 978-4-8322-4526-6 ).

The four volumes of the manga were published in German from May 7, 2015 to March 3, 2016 by Kazé Germany .

There is also a spin-off called Aldnoah.Zero Gaiden: Twin Gemini (ALDNOAH.ZERO 外 伝 TWIN GEMINI) by Kiyokazu Satake, the first volume of which was published on October 11, 2014 ( ISBN 978-4-8322-4504-4 ).
