history

The story of Fate / Zero takes place ten years before the events of Fate / stay night . The events of the fourth Grail War in Fuyuki are told. The Holy Grail War is a competition that was started many decades ago by the mage families Einzbern, Matou and Tohsaka. During the war, seven participating magicians each summon a hero spirit to fight each other for the power of the Holy Grail . This represents an omnipotent object for the fulfillment of wishes and is intended to fulfill one wish each of the winning duo that emerged from the Grail War. After three previous unsuccessful battles for the Grail, the fourth Grail War begins.

The Einzbern family is determined to win the Grail after three failed attempts at any cost. To this end, they have put the mage killer Kiritsugu Emiya into their service, despite his methods and reputation as a skilled mercenary and ruthless contract killer, determined to achieve his goals with all means at his disposal. Though Kiritsugu once wanted to become a hero who would be able to save anyone, he long ago abandoned his original ideals when he realized that saving one human life always came as a price. In this principle he sees the cause of all conflicts. In the name of humanity, he is willing to destroy everything and everyone who threatens peace without consideration.

Kiritsugu, however, finds himself in an inner conflict. He is torn between the love for his new family - his wife Irisviel and their daughter Illya - and the duties he must fulfill to win the Holy Grail. Meanwhile, Kiritsugu's most difficult opponent appears in the person of the priest Kirei Kotomine, who cannot find any fulfillment in his life and believes that the fight against Kiritsugu could be the answer to his inner emptiness.

As the story progresses, Kiritsugu realizes that the Holy Grail can not perform supernatural miracles, but can only grant wishes as the one who wishes would. The Holy Grail can then fulfill these wishes with enormous mana reserves, but the Grail has been possessed since the 3rd Grail War and therefore converts every wish into a negative form.

Characters

master

Kiritsugu Emiya ( 衛 宮 切 嗣 , Emiya Kiritsugu ) - (actual) master of: Saber

Kiritsugu is the main actor. He is only called "mage killer" by many magicians, as he has hunted mages in the past and killed anyone who stood in his way without consideration. He competes for the Einzbern family in the 4th Grail War and is in a relationship with Irisviel von Einzbern and has a daughter with her. The Einzberns let him fight for himself as an outsider because he is ruthless and brutal, and he is supposed to find and realize the last lost magic Heaven's Feel . He himself does not have many magical powers, just a so-called "Reality Marble" with which he can influence the time around and in himself. He also possesses a special firearm that fires projectiles made from the dust from his broken ribs that, on impact, destroy a mage's magic circuits. His will to get the holy grail was awakened when he lost his foster mother Natalia Kaminski in a plane down, but after a while he realized that the holy grail can only realize the wishes as the person making it would (example: Emiya would sacrifice the minority to the majority and so would the Grail, only to a greater extent) and he notes that the Grail has been turned into a weapon by the manifestation of Angra Mainyu (so it would turn into disaster for the every wish World ends), he turns against the Grail and wants to destroy it with Saber's powers. By destroying the Grail, the gate to the so-called greater grail, the actual wish-fulfilling Grail, is opened and the content (pure mana) pours over a large part of Fuyuki and destroys this part. Emiya searches for survivors in the chaos to help them, he discovers a little boy and saves him from the rubble. He adopts Shirou and raises him as his adoptive son.

Kirei Kotomine ( 言 峰 綺 礼 , Kotomine Kirei ) - Master of: Assassin

Kirei is the son of the so-called regulator Risei Kotomine and a member of the Church. 3 years before the war for the holy grail his wife died, now he tries to get an answer during the war for the reason for his perceived emptiness, which he seeks until the end in the fight against Kiritsugu. He makes a pact with the Tohsakas, but always has his own goals. Only in the course of the war did he develop a need to receive the Holy Grail. Kiritsugu has strong concerns about Kirei as Kirei apparently learned many types of magic but never finished them. In addition, Kirei was an executor for the church and was able to gain experience in fighting magicians and mana powers. After the death of his father, he takes over the unused command spells that are left over from past Grail Wars. His rejection of Kiritsugu is based on the fact that he sees Kiritsugu's ideology (a world without hatred and war) not as a simple and naive utopia , but as a danger and self-destruction of humanity. He is of the opinion that the definition of humanity is based on violence, war and hatred and is therefore compulsively tied to them. He is apparently shot by Kiritsugu, but wakes up near Archer and realizes that the Grail has revived him and Archer. Only in the chaos that the Grail has left behind does he realize that it was actually his wish that the Grail tried to put into practice. However, since the grail was destroyed, only part of Fuyuki will be destroyed by the greater grail . Kirei realizes that he has to wait for the next Grail War in order to have his wish come true again.

Irisviel von Einzbern ( ア イ リ ス フ ィ ー ル ・ フ ォ ン ・ ア イ ン ツ ベ ル ン , Airisufīru fon Aintsuberun ) - Master of: Saber

Irisviel is the wife of Kiritsugu. She is a homunculus . Since the Einzbern family was one of the founding families of the war, a homunculus was created in the family that served as a kind of vessel for the Holy Grail until the end of the war. Like the rest of the Einzbern family, she also uses alchemy , which she uses for her healing powers. In contrast to Kiritsugu, she is a free spirit and very optimistic, which is why she does not even doubt Kiritsugu's ideals and wishes until the end. But she feels powerless against the joy of Einzbern, because he also wants to abuse her daughter as the bearer of the Grail. She tries to give Illyasviel a normal life as much as possible, but this only puts even more pressure on her. Even when she is kidnapped by Kirei, she does not lose faith in the good and her husband. Irisviel carries the Saber "Avalon" sword scabbard inside.

Tokiomi Tohsaka ( 遠 坂 時 臣 , Tōsaka Tokiomi ) - Master of: Archer

Tokiomi is a very vain and tradition-conscious magician who specializes in crystal magic. He made a pact with Kirei Kotomine to have better chances in the war. He is with Aoi Tohsaka, they both have two daughters, Rin Tohsaka and Sakura Matou. Sakura is put up for adoption because the magic of a family can only be passed on to one descendant. The Matou family takes on Sakura and elects her as the future head of the Matou family. Tokiomi wants to use the Grail to fathom the origin of everything and to increase the reputation of the Tohsaka family. He teaches Rin in crystal magic and trains her to take part in the next war for the Holy Grail. He is not entirely satisfied with his Servant Archer because he is too stubborn and stubborn.

Waver Velvet ( ウ ェ イ バ ー ・ ベ ル ベ ッ ト , Ueibā Berubetto ) - Master of: Rider

Waver is a young magician who is tutored by Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald. He cannot understand why so many magicians have a strong conservative stance towards their traditions. He himself represents the 3rd generation of magicians in his family and is therefore laughed at by many and not taken seriously. He wants the holy grail to prove to others that he too is capable of such a victory. Waver takes a catalyst that was actually intended for Kayneth Archibald, this enables him to summon Alexander the Great (Rider). Rider and Waver later become friends, even though their characters are completely different.

Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald ( ケ イ ネ ス ・ エ ル メ ロ イ ・ ア ー チ ボ ル ト , Keinesu Erumeroi Āchiboruto ) - Master of: Lancer

Kayneth is the magic professor at Waver Velvet and constantly pokes fun at his abilities because he doesn't see him as a strong wizard. Like Tokiomi, he is very vain and hates it when you break traditions as a magician. He is engaged to Sola-Ui Nuada-Re Sophia-Ri, but both have different views and each want the holy grail for themselves. Kayneth himself is not entirely satisfied with his Servant Lancer, as Lancer is too independent and too strong for him who holds on to "chivalry". After he is badly wounded in the fight against Kiritsugu, Lancer brings him to Sola-Ui, who took advantage of the situation to transfer Kayneth's command spells to herself. After Caster has been defeated, he gets another command spell from the regulator and then murders him so that no other master gets any more command spells.

Sola-Ui Nuada-Re Sophia-Ri ( ソ ラ ウ ・ ヌ ァ ザ レ ・ ソ フ ィ ア リ ) - (later) Master of: Lancer

Sola-Ui is the fiancée of Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald and wants to support him in the war from the start. She herself has little experience with the war for the Holy Grail. Due to the curse of Diarmuid Ua Duibhne, she falls madly in love with him and wants him all to herself. Lancer tries to keep her from her plans to make him her servant because he doesn't want to involve her directly in the war. After Kayneth is badly wounded in the fight against Kiritsugu, she takes the opportunity to transfer the command spells to herself. She doesn't keep Lancer as a servant for long, however, as Maiya cuts off her arm with the command spells.

Kariya Matou ( 間 桐 雁 夜 , Matō Kariya ) - Master of: Berserker

Kariya is a longtime friend of Aoi Tohsaka and is like an uncle to their two daughters. He himself has little or no magical abilities, but wants to fight for the well-being of Sakura Matou, who has been cast out by the Tohsaka family and who is actually the 2nd biological daughter of Tokiomi and Aoi. In order to go to war, he has to accumulate enough mana using special worms that live in his body; this increasingly weakens him with every single spell. He is not fond of Berserker for this reason, as it costs him too much strength and mana and Berserker often fights on his own.

Ryuunosuke Uryuu ( 雨 生 龍之介 , Uryū Ryūnosuke ) - Master of: Caster

Ryuunosuke is a young adult who has a highly developed mental disorder that gives him a kick with any violence. Because of this, he kills and tortures children en masse. His entry into the war is accidental as he finds an old book of magic spells and reads them aloud, thereby the holy grail recognized him as another master. He is intrigued by his servant caster, who wants to help him commit more murders. He is not interested in the holy grail because since the beginning of the war he has only cared about killing people. In the course of the series Ryuunosuke thinks more and more about the meaning of his deeds and tries to explain them to himself. When he sees his own blood, he realizes what he has been longing for all along.

Servants

Saber ( セ イ バ ー , Seibā ) - heroic spirit of: King Arthur

Saber belongs to the class of knights and attaches great importance to the honor of knighthood and demands the same from their opponents. In the beginning Kiritsugu does not want to accept her as his servant and so Saber has to get along with Irisviel as her master. After a while, the relationship with Kiritsugu turns into a real argument. Kiritsugu does not believe in a justified violent death, nor in a code that makes war more meaningful or human. However, Saber sees it completely differently and vehemently sticks to chivalry. Saber wants the Holy Grail to save her own empire and to undo the rebellion of her followers, especially the betrayal by Mordred . She herself uses the Excalibur sword , which is also one of the strongest Noble Phantasm (a weapon specially materialized by the heroic spirit). The Avalon sword scabbard has powerful healing powers and helps Kiritsugu as a catalyst to summon Arturia Pendragon (Saber). She always hides her sword itself and makes it appear invisible, since she does not want to reveal the length of her blade.

Archer ( ア ー チ ャ ー , Āchā ) - heroic spirit of: Gilgamesh

Archer also belongs to the class of knights and has as good habits as Saber and Rider, but he often tries to express them with coercion and aggression. He is the only demigod in Fate / Zero and therefore extremely strong. He is a very clever, but also very sadistic servant. He is in love with himself and so he apparently only takes part in the Grail War, as he regards it as pure entertainment and the behavior of Kirei provides him with the nourishment. He sees himself as "The King of Heroes" because he is the oldest of all heroes. His Noble Phantasm itself is made up of many, as he can open a gate (called "the Gate of Babylon") to his own halls where many holy and magical swords and other weapons are stored. So he has a lot more than just a Noble Phantasm , including the strongest of all, the so-called "Sword of Rupture" ( dt. Sword of the division ) and " Ea " (after the Babylonian god), with the attack " Enuma Elish “Which is able to destroy entire worlds such as“ Reality Marble ”, which is why it belongs to the category Anti-World Noble Phantasm . In the course of the story he develops more and more positive feelings for Saber, as she seems to be able to entertain him well through her desperation.

Rider ( ラ イ ダ ー , Raidā ) - heroic spirit of: Alexander the Great

Rider, like Saber and Archer, has good and honorable behavior. Rider is also known in Fate / Zero as the "King of Conquerors". Rider is a very level-headed, calm and imperturbable knight who, thanks to the Rider class, is particularly agile and can move around quickly. To get around he has a chariot with which he can teleport and fight. He himself appears braver and more level-headed than his master and also undertakes many leisure activities with his master. His Noble Phanatsm is both the chariot and his Reality Marble , with which he can create an alternative environment that transports the enemy and himself into a desert where Rider is supported by his army. Rider tries to show Saber and Archer what it really means to be a king, so he shows both of them his Reality Marble on his own initiative. He can't understand why Saber mourns her past and why she doesn't want to look ahead. What bothers him about Gilgamesh is his arrogance and, above all, his ignorance of his own people.

Lancer ( ラ ン サ ー , Ransā ) - heroic spirit by: Diarmuid Ua Duibhne

Lancer is the last servant who belongs to the knight class and is the only servant to always carry his Noble Phantasm with him and use it as a weapon. Like Saber, Lancer is a very honorable knight and hates it when something dishonorable happens or when he has to carry out actions against his will that violate his chivalry or ideology. This often leads to great tension between his master and him, but this does not prevent him from dueling with Saber at every opportunity. Sola-Ui is spellbound by Diarmuid's curse (curse of love) and loses her heart to him, so that she forces Kayneth to transfer the command spells to herself. Lancer notices the plan and tries to dissuade Sola from her idea, nevertheless she takes the command spells and Lancer becomes her servant.

Berserker ( バ ー サ ー カ ー , Bāsākā ) - heroic spirit of: Lancelot

The class of berserkers is always clothed by heroic spirits, who fall into rage, self-hatred and madness. Berserker is therefore one of the most dangerous servants of all and also one of the strongest. He has tremendous precision and response that helps him hold out against Archer's Anti-Army Noble Phantasm in the beginning . He went berserk because he was enraged by the selflessness, naivety and soft-heartedness of Saber as a table knight and he found no redemption in his own deeds because he was never reprimanded by Saber. That's why he fights with all his might against Saber to find redemption and to clear his conscience. When touched, he can turn any object into his Noble Phantasm , which only he can use himself, and can change or cover its shape. His real Noble Phantasm , however, is his sword, Arondight.

Caster ( キ ャ ス タ ー , Kyasutā ) - heroic spirit by: Gilles de Rais

Caster has the most mana servers of all classes and is the only class that can build its own protected area. Like his master, he loves to kill innocent people, preferably children, as this allows him to accumulate even more mana. Up to a certain point the church has done nothing about his lust for murder, but when the security of the entire city was affected, the regulator ordered that he only fight against casters for a period of time. The regulator promises to give the winner against Caster additional command spells. Caster confuses Saber with Jeanne d'Arc, who used to be his comrade in battle and looks similar to Saber. As the story progresses, he becomes downright obsessed with her and the holy grail becomes secondary to him.

Assassin ( ア サ シ ン , Asashin ) - heroic spirit of: Hasan-i Sabbāh

Assassin sees himself as the master of all assassins, as his heroic spirit is the namesake of this class. Its special ability is to gain entry unnoticed and cautiously, and it is particularly suitable for shadowing its opponents unnoticed. This Hasan is the Hasan with the Hundred Faces, whose ability allowed him to divide his body into hundreds. Since his powers are thus also divided, he is hardly a danger to the other servants. Kirei uses Assassin mainly to educate and has the church shadowed by him, although this is a neutral reason in the Grail War.
