Expelled from Paradise ( Japanese 楽 園 追 放 -Expelled from Paradise-, Rakuen Tsuihō , German 'Expulsion from Paradise') is a computer-animated science fiction anime film from 2014.

action

In the year 2400 (in the German version 2700) 98% of humanity live on the space station Deva, but with a digitized consciousness in a virtual world. One of these is the security agency agent Angela Balzac, who hunts the hacker Frontier Setter, who keeps hooking up to the station's systems to invite residents to accompany him on a journey into space. When the trace of it can be traced back to earth, Angela and other colleagues are given the task of capturing it there. Since the residents of Deva have got rid of their bodies, Angela has a body made for the first time, whereby she shortens the process in order to forestall her colleagues and therefore makes do with a body that would correspond to her at 16 years of age.

As a contact on the devastated earth, her Tsarik "Dingo" Kajiwara is assigned, whereby their first meeting ends on bad terms, as Dingo takes advantage of the fact that Angela arrives with a battle suit ( Mech ) called Arhan and therefore attracts hundreds of sandworms so that Angela can attract them kill for him and he can sell them. He also destroys the Arhan's antenna, as a constant connection to the space station is required, which Frontier Setter could take advantage of to locate it, and forces Angela to sell the now useless Arhan. In the search for Frontier Setter, Angela exhausted herself until she suffers a circulatory collapse, as she has taken corresponding signs such as tiredness due to a lack of knowledge as the normal state of a human body. From there she begins to get more involved with Dingo's suggestions and warms up towards him.

They find out that the Frontier Setter has been buying raw materials for rocket fuel for three generations and always paying for it in electronics, which while nothing special on Deva would make him a rich man on earth. With a tracking device in a delivery for Frontier Setter, you are able to find its hiding place. There they are greeted by a robot who friendly introduces itself to them as a frontier setter. He tells them that after the great war more than a hundred years ago there was an alternative plan in addition to the Deva plan to evacuate humanity onto a spaceship and look for a new home. When this plan was abandoned in favor of the Deva Plan, a great power secretly pursued this plan, whereby the spaceship was secretly completed in space, but the militarily more valuable engine was to be completed on earth and, when completed, was supposed to be brought into space . Although this great power / organization no longer exists, Frontier Setter sees it as the AI of the engine, as a mission to complete this plan, which is why he hacked into Deva to find those interested in the trip. Angela asks him to refrain from doing this and to seek the official route through the Deva government, which Frontier Setter willingly accepts with regret. Frontier Setter is otherwise very accommodating and talkative and has developed its own personality over time, who loves music and also composes himself.

Before Angela returns to Deva, she offers Dingo to become a Deva citizen as well. Dingo rejects this, because although one has renounced the ailments and limitations of the body on Deva and has a simpler life than on earth, however, the computer resources allocated on Deva depend on what one has done for society, which explains why Angela was so driven at first to close the case quickly.

After Angela reported to her superiors, they explain to her that an uncontrollable AI capable of hacking Deva is too great a danger that needs to be eliminated. When Angela refuses and announces that she will bring the case to a higher authority, she is arrested and her superiors launch an attack on Frontier Setters' base. He frees Angela and explains that he will take off in an hour, and asks her to hold up Deva's troops until then, giving her some of his computing power to control an Arhan. Together with Dingo, she manages to fend off the first waves of attacks. Shortly before its launch, Frontier Setter announced that none of the citizens addressed had shown Deva's interest in a trip into space and asked Angela - Dingo had already declined. Angela also refuses, on the grounds that she still has far too many new things to experience in her physical form on earth. Frontier Setter is already so human in his behavior and views that he can therefore fulfill his mission even if he is flying alone, and he can freely imagine other beings as descendants of humanity.

reception

Despite being limited to a few movie theaters, the film was the ninth most-viewed film on the opening weekend and grossed 107 million yen in 15 days. The Blu-ray sold 30,000 times in the first week, making it the most successful anime release, and with 56,000 copies it was the seventh best-selling animated film and third best-selling anime film in 2015.

Expelled from Paradise was named Best Animated Work at the 24th Japan Movie Critics Awards .

According to Jacob Chapman, the particular strength of the film is Gen Urobuchi's script and Seiji Mizushima's clear directing in the implementation, especially the interactions between the two main characters and Urobuchi's tendency towards " semiotic subversion" in which it takes up the usual genre premises and expectations, but in the main theme the plot is completely different from these. Chapman cites as an example the apparent theme of an arrogant visitor from an allegedly better, virtual world who learns humility from the "savages" in the real world and that the real world is better. In fact, however, this point of view is quickly pushed aside with a "who cares", neither is Deva or the reality of the earth presented as particularly good or bad, nor is what is at stake particularly important. Rather, the main issue was to be able to freely choose his life and to be happy with the film, despite action scenes for his "profound tenderness" ( profound tenderness ) distinguishing.

Technically, Chapman highlights the soundtrack and cel-shading computer animation, which looks like hand-drawn, especially in slow scenes - apart from outliers such as Angela's hair - but one overshoots the mark than the "Auf Drei" Limited , which is common for anime - Mimicked animation with its low frame rate. Still, it was the best-looking Japanese 3D computer animation film to date.
