Michiyo Yasuda

Michiyo Yasuda ( Japanese 保 田 道 世 Yasuda Michiyo , born April 28, 1939 in Nakano ; † October 5, 2016 in Tokyo Prefecture ) was a Japanese animator . She is best known for her work for Studio Ghibli .

Life

Yasuda was born one of six children of a professor in Tokyo's Nakano district. In 1958 she joined the Tōei Animation film studio , where she met Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki . She first worked in Takahata's film Taiyō no Ōji: Horusu no Daibōken (1968) and then switched to Shin-Ei animation and then to Nippon animation . There she worked for Takahata on the series Marco . In her next project Mirai Shōnen Conan (1978) by Miyazaki, she led the entire color selection of the series for the first time. In 1984 Nausicaä from the Valley of the Winds followed , whose success led to the establishment of Studio Ghibli in 1985. She then headed the paint department until she retired. Her last film in this capacity was Ponyo - The Great Adventure by the Sea (2008). In 2011 she received a Lifetime Achievement in Animation award at the Japanese Movie Critics Awards . For How the Wind Raises (2013) she was a consultant for color design.

Yasuda died on October 5, 2016 after an illness at the age of 77.
