The series is an adaptation of the novel The Incredible Tide by Alexander Key . In 1984 the series was followed by a movie with the title Mirai Shōnen Conan Tokubetsu-hen: Kyodaiki Gigant no Fukkatsu ( 未来 少年 コ ナ ン 特別 編 巨大 機 ギ ガ ン ト の 復活 ).

action

The prehistory begins in July 2008, at a time when humanity is threatened with extinction. A devastating war between the great nations with ultramagnetic weapons had preceded and had caused great damage to the earth's crust and tilted the earth's axis so that the five continents had been torn apart and sunk below sea level.

An attempt by a group of people to escape into space failed and their spaceships fell back to earth. Only one of them escaped destruction and crash landed on a tiny island that was miraculously preserved. The shipwrecked people settled there and built a small settlement.

Among these survivors, a boy named Conan was born after about nine years, a new glimmer of hope on earth. Eleven years later, almost all of the survivors have died and only Conan and his "grandfather" still live on the island. When Conan finds a girl named Lana lying unconscious on the beach one day in 2028, a great adventure begins for both of them.

Characters

Conan (Konan, コ ナ ン)
The series' main character, Conan, is an 11-year-old boy raised by grandfather on Nokosarejima Island. He is incredibly strong and has a telepathic affinity for Lana.
Lana (Rana, ラ ナ)
Lana is the first person to come to Nokosarejima Island from outside and the first girl ever to see Conan. Lana is the granddaughter of Dr. Lao, and Lepka wants to use it to force Lao to reveal the secret of solar energy to him. Lana is telephathic, can communicate with the seagull 'Tikki' and can sense her grandfather's presence in the distance. She comes from High Harbor.
Grandfather (Ojī, お じ い)
Conan's "grandfather", whose exact relationship to Conan is not clear, as he himself reports that Conan's mother died soon after he was born and the whole community then raised Conan together.
Monsley (Monsurī, モ ン ス リ ー)
Monsley, a young commander of the Industria Army, is the second non-islander Conan sees. She follows Lepka's orders and, as the pilot of the flying boat Falco, helps to seize the fugitive Lana, and later carries out the invasion of High Harbor. At the very end, however, she resists Lepka and allies with Conan.
Jimsy (Jimushī, ジ ム シ ー)
A wild boy who lives by himself on the first island that Conan reaches. After a brief fight with Conan, Jimsy quickly becomes his first and loyal friend and helps Conan free Lana. Jimsy is a master hunter and is mainly powered by his hungry stomach.
Dyce (Daisu, ダ イ ス)
Dyce is a citizen of Industria and the captain of the sailing ship Barracuda . In the run-up to the story he had been given the task of fetching Lana from High Harbor as a prisoner, but had let her escape out of pity. Dyce is a weird pragmatist and a rascal at first, but ends up becoming one of Conan's allies.
Lepka (Repuka, レ プ カ)
As Industria's head of government, Lepka is theoretically subordinate to the Industria High Council, which is composed of a group of high-ranking scientists. But he has his own dark plans and soon makes himself the sole dictator and is the big villain of the series and Conan's adversary. Lepka wants to wrest the secret of solar energy from Lao in order to be able to operate his weapon systems with which he wants to rule over the rest of the world.
Dr. Lao (Rao-hakase, ラ オ 博士)
Lao is Lana's grandfather and was originally a member of the Industria High Council. After learning of Lepka's intentions, he fled and went into hiding. He wants the solar energy, the secret of which only he knows, to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes and wants the people of Industria to lay down their arms and start a new life.
