Gurren Lagann ( jap. 天元突破グレンラガン , Tengen Toppa Guren Ragan of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann ., Dt as "Heaven By breakers Coos Lagann") is an anime - TV series of the studio Gainax in 2007. The series was also implemented as Manga and adapted for a video game.
The series takes place in the distant future and tells of a group of mecha warriors who want to make the earth's surface habitable again and fight against tyrants and enemies of life on earth.
content
world
In the distant future, people will live underground and believe that the earth's surface is uninhabitable or no longer exists. In many caves and underground passages they dig for new, larger habitats. In this world everything is determined by the action of spirals and anti-spirals.
Spirals are circular forms of energy that all living beings have and that can be directed by a fighting spirit. The anti-spirals represent the counterpart to them, they are represented by geometric shapes such as squares or triangles. They are used by other life forms who want to destroy spirals living beings. Living beings are named according to whether they have spiral or anti-spiral DNA.
The spiral king on the earth's surface suppresses the spirals so that they do not collide with the Gunmans (machines of war) on the one hand and the anti-spirals on the other hand.
action
The young Simon, who had lost his parents in one of the dreaded earthquakes at an early age, finds a drill-head-like pendant while digging, which he keeps as a talisman. Kamina, a young man and a good friend of Simon, takes him with her to visit the surface of the earth with a group of young people. However, this is forbidden, and the mayor of the small town prevents them and arrests Kamina. When Simon now finds a large head in the ground, he helps Kamina break out to show it. However, they are interrupted when a giant gunman, a robot controlled by so-called beastmen , falls into the cave, along with a girl named Yoko. Kamina believes that Yoko comes from the surface of the earth and wants to help her destroy the Gunman, but they fail. Simon brings them underground, where he shows them a way to discover him. Yoko recognizes a little gunman in the head, which thanks to the talisman is made to work again, and with his help Simon, Yoko and Kamina manage to destroy the enemy gunman. Kamina is the name of Simon Lagann's Gunman.
Now on the surface they get to know Yoko's people, a human camp that had prepared itself to fight the beastmen. When they are attacked again the next day, Kamina manages to acquire her own gunman. He gives it the name Coo. Now that it has been quiet for a while, Yoko, Simon and Kamina go hunting for food, where they meet a beastman named Viral who challenges them. In the fight, Simon and Kamina manage to merge their gunmen, creating a new two-faced mecha called Gurren-Lagann.
Simon's mecha has the ability to unite with other mechas and take them over. In the following time they get to know several allies who, encouraged by Kamina's successful appropriation of a mecha, have stolen mechas from the beastmen themselves. Kamina founds the Gurren Brigade (Japanese Gurren-dan) group, which fights against the beastmen. After Kamina's death, Simon continues to lead the group. Among the new comrades-in-arms is Princess Nia Tepperin, who helps Simon get over his depression because of the death of his friend. Under the Gunmen, the Gurren Brigade fights the Spiral King, Lord Genome, who hides the people under the surface of the earth and the beastmen who are subordinate to this.
Seven years after the Spiral King was defeated, Simon is "Commander-in-Chief" of a new colony that he founded and built up with his friends. However, a spiral extermination program is started with the millionth person born, the goal of which is the destruction of all people in the world. As a result of this program, a negative energy awakens in Princess Nia and she becomes Messenger Nia . As it turns out, it is an energy contrary to the spirals and is called an anti-spiral . Then Simon and his colleagues try to fight them. They fight in the universe and between parallel worlds and the revived Lord Genome also supports them.
After the group has defeated the anti-spirals, calm returns to planet earth. Simon and Nia get married and immediately after the kiss, Nia disappears into thin air because she consisted of the energy of the now destroyed anti-spirals.
Characters
Simon ( シ モ ン )
- He is a 14 year old boy and the first to control a mecha, which Simon's friend Kamina calls Lagann. Simon is rather shy and often scared. In combat he is more likely to be the one who just wants to run away, but can be motivated to a certain extent by anger or the pressure of Kamina, which makes him enormously strong. He himself regards his friend's courage with amazement and fear at the same time. After the SpiralenKönig, Lord Genome Tepperin, has been defeated, he is portrayed in the following parts as a young man whose attitude and behavior has changed significantly towards Kamina. He then holds the title of "Commander" as the leader of the "Dai-Gurren Brigade".
Kamina ( カ ミ ナ )
- He is Simon's best friend and is called brother by him, also his role model. He is confident, arrogant, fearless, and cocky. He believes that life exists on the surface of the earth because he was once there with his father. He is tattooed all over his body, always wears elongated, W-shaped sunglasses and later also wears his father's cloak, which bears the sign of a burning skull and Kamina found him on the forays out next to his father's remains. He is the founder and leader of the "Gurren Brigade", which also fights against the Beastmen under this symbol and later as the "Dai-Gurren Brigade" against Lord Genome. His mecha has the name Gurren, which can be combined with Simons Lagann to "Gurren Lagann". However, Kamina dies in the fight against the beastmen, which leaves Simon completely distraught, and only lets Nias look up again after the appearance. After the victory of the Gurren Brigade over the Spiral King, the new capital was named after him and a memorial was erected by him in memory.
Yoko Littner (ヨ ー コ ・ リ ッ ト ナ ー )
- The red-haired Amazon is equipped with a large-caliber, multifunctional sniper rifle and, in addition to her mostly very tight clothing, wears yellow protective goggles, a brooch in the shape of a skull in her hair and a white scarf with red stripes. She is self-confident, very extroverted and actively supports the “Gurren Brigade”. Falls in love with him before Kamina's death. She became the subject of numerous fan service scenes. Works as a primary school teacher in the time of peace after defeating Lord Genome.
Nia Tepperin ( ニ ア ・ テ ッ ペ リ ン )
- She is a princess who was sealed in a chest by her own father, the Spiral King, disposed of like garbage and shortly afterwards was freed by Simon. After the Spiral King, Lord Genome, is defeated, she is at the helm with Simon, but is transformed by the Anti-Spirals into one of their own to announce the downfall of mankind as an ambassador. After Anti-Spiral is defeated, she marries Simon, shortly before she disintegrates in response to the Anti-Spiral's destruction.
Conception
The series consists of two parts. Up to episode 15, the first tells the origins of the Gurren Brigade and the first adventures. The 16th episode summarizes the previous events. There is a leap in time of seven years from the 17th episode, the story of Princess Nia and the anti-spirals begins.
As an epilogue at the end of the series, the strongly aged characters and humanity as a civilization capable of interstellar travel are shown.
