Hiroyuki Imaishi ( Japanese 今 石 洋 之 , Imaishi Hiroyuki ; born October 4, 1971 in Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese animator and anime director.

Career

Hiroyuki Imaishi studied at the Tama School of Art . After graduating, he started working as an animator at the animation studio Gainax , where he first worked in 1996 as an intermediate draftsman for the Neon Genesis Evangelion series .

After he had previously only taken on animation tasks , he was given the script, connection and animation management for episode 19 of the Kare Kano series in 1997 . He received a lot of attention because he replaced the conventional animation (which was used in the other episodes) with cutout animation . To do this, he drew the characters in the Manga style, cut them out and attached them to sticks, whereby the animation was created by moving them along with clearly visible sticks in front of the static backgrounds. In FLCL from 2000, where he was the animation director and assistant for some episodes, especially episode 5, there are also different drawing styles.

In 2004 he made his debut as a director with the OVA Dead Leaves of the animation studio Production IG . In this work there is therefore his style, that of an unusual and western style of drawing with strong colors and action-packed image sequences, which is why he is also referred to as the " enfant terrible of the anime world" ( ア ニ メ 界 の 暴 れ ん 坊 , Anime-kai no abarenbō ) .

At Gainax he was appointed director of the first episode of OVA Re: Cutie Honey that same year . In 2007 he was the director of the 27-part television series Gurren Lagann , for which he received the Animation Kobe Award, and the series received three other awards, the Award for Excellent Animation of the Japan Media Arts Festival sponsored by the Japanese Culture Department . In 2010 he directed Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt , which is also characterized by an animation in the style of American cartoon series such as Powerpuff Girls , which is unusual for anime , and is stylistically linked to Dead Leaves .

In August 2011 he left Gainax with his colleague Masahiko Ōtsuka and founded his own studio Trigger. He also directs the studio's first television series, Kill la Kill (2013).
