The Francis William Bird Park is a 89  acres (36  ha ) large Park in Walpole in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is managed by The Trustees of Reservations and is open to the public free of charge during the day. However, the name of the park does not designate a bird park , as the obvious translation of Bird suggests, but goes back to its builder Charles Sumner Bird, Sr.

history

The park was established in 1925 by industrialist Charles Sumner Bird, Sr. and his wife Anna as a recreational area for workers in the surrounding factories. They gave the park the name of their son Francis William Bird (1888-1918), who died of the Spanish flu at the age of 30 . They commissioned John Nolen, the contemporary of Charles Eliot and protégé of Frederick Law Olmsted , to design the park . He described his vision of the park design as a “place to breathe - a combination of wide, sun-drenched green areas interspersed with shady clearings and hills covered with tall trees; all this to the music of a murmuring brook ”. The Francis William Park Trust donated the park to the trustees for further management in 2003.

Protected area

Until the trustees acquired the site, the park was administered by the Francis William Park Trust and was not subject to any special protection provisions. The trustees declared it a protected area in 2003, carried out repairs and modernizations in stages, and issued conditions of use for visitors, which also contain an extensive list of prohibitions.

A total of 3 mi (4.8  km ) of hiking trails are available on the park grounds  . The park is designed in such a way that it invites relaxation and activities at the same time - in particular, playgrounds , tennis courts , basketball courts and a small swimming lake can be used. In plants, the dominant red maple , but there are Weymouth pine , red oak , American white oak , yellow birch and Canadian hemlock seen.
