The Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate is a 1902-built country house in Canton in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is managed by The Trustees of Reservations as well as the associated 90  acres (36.4  hectares ) property .

history

In the late 19th century, the doctor and surgeon Arthur Tracy Cabot inherited the family property and had the house and the surrounding facilities built on the property in 1902 by the then well-known architect Charles A. Platt, who specialized in country houses . Cabot died in 1912, leaving property and house to his widow Susan. In 1945, his niece Eleanor Cabot Bradley (the daughter of his brother Godfrey Lowell Cabot ) and her husband Ralph Bradley took possession of the property and added ponds, a camellia garden and an art studio. In doing so, they did not change the existing garden design or planting and thus preserved the original appearance of the property.

In 1991, Eleanor Cabot Bradley gave her share of the property to the Trustees of Reservations in her will, who were able to acquire further parts in 1999.

House and gardens

The property is located a short distance from the busy Massachusetts Route 128 and offers a peaceful retreat. Particularly noteworthy is the Italianate-style garden, surrounded by lattice-like walls , which is the core of Platt's architectural concept. The strictly formal design of the garden is also supported and contrasted by plantings of rhododendrons , azaleas and dogwood -Gewächsen.

There are also some farm buildings - a small farm is still in operation today - and 15 acres (6.1 ha) of open space. The outer areas of the property include an additional 60 acres (24.3 hectares) of forest and wetland areas, criss-crossed by 3  mi (4.8  km ) of hiking trails.

The site can be accessed free of charge from sunrise to sunset every day, but the house itself is not open to visitors. Weddings often take place there on weekends, which is why the garden and the immediate vicinity of the house are regularly closed on these days. The trustees have established a set of rules of conduct for the property.
