Moose Hill Farm is the name of a 347  acres (1.4  km² ) large nature reserve around the elevation of the same name near Sharon in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . It is managed by The Trustees of Reservations organization.

history

In 1904 , Henry P. Kendall from Walpole , whose foundation still exists today, took over his uncle's cotton wool factory on the banks of the Neponset River , which was in economic difficulties . In the course of his life he built it up into the internationally active textile company Kendall Company , which was taken over by Colgate-Palmolive in 1972 .

His success allowed Kendall to acquire and preserve the Moose Hill Farm property. In the 1940s, dairy cows from Guernsey grazed there , which was an exceptional feature; In addition, several thousand acres of woodland belonged to the farm area. The foundations, stone walls and open spaces still preserved show the development of agriculture in Massachusetts over the past centuries. The Henry P. Kendall Foundation transferred the present protected area to the Trustees of Reservations in 2005.

Protected area

Visitors to the protected area can find out more about the history of agriculture. The open spaces were cleared with oxen and plows, then farmed with sheep, and finally dairy cows were made available as pasture. In the woods there are still some examples of the American chestnut , which was once dominant in the eastern United States, but was almost wiped out by a bark fungus.

At 466 ft (142  m ), Moose Hill is  the second highest elevation between Boston and Providence after the Great Blue Hill . Located near the former informal border between the state of Massachusetts and the Wampanoag area, it has always played a strategic role in Indian culture and politics in the past. From its top you have a good view of the Boston skyline and the Neponset River Valley . About 3.5  mi (5.6  km ) of hiking trails are available to visitors.
