Powisset Farm is a 109 acres (44.1 hectare ) nature reserve near Dover in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . It is managed by The Trustees of Reservations organization.
history
Indians operated already long in this area before Columbus the Atlantic crossing, agriculture . Colonists settling in the vicinity of Dedham claimed the land in the 17th century and continued agricultural use into the 19th century. In the course of time, the wood and coal industries were added.
In 1923, Amelia Peabody , who lived in Boston , bought a house north of the farm and, until her death in 1984, gradually added 30 more parcels to her last approximately 800 acres (3.2 km²) property. This also included the Powisset Farm and today's Noanet Woodlands reserve . Her family was part of the Boston Brahmins , so Amelia Peabody was not dependent on gainful employment and held many parties on her property. However, she opened her property to the public while she was still alive in order to give the less privileged access to nature.
This idea is carried on today by the trustees. In 1985 the estate managers bought 188 acres (76.1 hectares) and sold 33 acres (13.4 hectares) of that to the City of Dover and another 33 acres to other interested parties. The remaining area was placed under protection by the City of Dover and the state, and the 109 acres of agricultural land was transferred to the Trustees in 1989, who made it publicly accessible as a protected area in 2008.
Protected area
The Trustees of Reservations have restored the facilities and operate solidarity agriculture there . An approximately 1 mi (1.6 km ) long circular hiking trail is available to visitors. The Noanet Woodlands protected area, also managed by the trustees, and the 1,200 acres (4.9 km²) Hale Reservation are in the immediate vicinity .
