Rocky Woods ( German  rocky forest ) is a 491  acres (2  km² ) large nature reserve near the city of Medfield in the state of Massachusetts in the United States , which is administered by the organization The Trustees of Reservations . It is directly adjacent to the Fork Factory Brook area, which is also administered by the Trustees .

history

In the 18th century, the area was a commons of the City of Medfield and was later divided into parcels that were given to residents. They widely used sledges to transport felled trees. In the early 19th century, the network of trails laid by the loggers was also used to remove granite slabs from the quarry west of Chickering Pond . The records show that the Dedham courthouse (built from 1825 to 1826) was built with this granite .

In the 1920s, Joel Goldthwait began purchasing forest parcels that had little commercial value at the time. He set up riding and hiking trails there and gave the approximately 300 acres (1.2 km²) land to the Trustees of Reservations in 1942, who formed the Rocky Woods reserve. In the following years - most recently in 1983 - the area was expanded to include additional properties.

Protected area

The highest point of the sanctuary is 435  ft (132.6  m ) high Cedar Hill , which is also where the 6  mi (9.7  km ) hiking trails lead. The area is part of both the Charles River and the Neponset River catchment area with the Vine Brook and Mill Brook rivers . The high water table leads to the formation of wetlands , which attract a large number of songbirds - especially bunting - but also provide a habitat for bullfrogs and ornamental turtles .
