biography

Takami Akai graduated from Tottori Prefectural High School Sakai ( 鳥取 県 立 境 高等学校 , Tottori-kenritsu Sakai kōtō gakkō ) in Sakaiminato . He then attended the Ōsaka art college in the field of image planning ( 映像 計画 学科 , Eizō keikaku gakka ; today: image department) of the faculty of art studies. During his studies he took part in the production of the opening film for the Japanese science fiction convention Daicon III in 1981 , where he was responsible for the character design. With his fellow students Hiroyuki Yamaga and Hideaki Anno , who were also part of the production committee, he founded the independent film group Daicon Film, from which the animation studio Gainax emerged in 1984 .

At the Daicon film production Kaettekita Ultraman he stood out as a special director because of his effective use of paper works and his camera work, so that a few years later Tsuburaya Production , the producer of the Ultraman series, gave permission to publish the special effects scenes on DVD.

For the illustrations for the first Princess Maker (1991), he followed the style of Alfons Maria Mucha . Together with Hiroyuki Morioka , he developed the alphabet Ath for his Seikai series .

On April 4, 2007 , after reading a critical thread on 2channel regarding Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann , Takami Akai posted on the page of a Gainax employee on the social network mixi : “Reading something like this seriously is like reading your face on an anus and take a deep drag. ”This sparked an online controversy that resulted in Takami Akai stepping down as the show's producer and Gainax chairman on April 27th.
