Hiroyuki Morioka ( Japanese 森岡 浩 之 Morioka Hiroyuki ; born March 2, 1962 in Hyōgo Prefecture , Japan ) is a Japanese science fiction writer .

Life

In 1992, his first novel Yume no ki ga tsugeta nara ( 夢 の 樹 が 接 げ た な ら , dt. "If we can plant a dream tree") appeared in SF Magazine from Tokyo- based publisher Hayakawa Shobō ( 早川 書房 ).

In 1996 he published Seikai no Monshō ( 星 界 の 紋章 ), his first long novel in three volumes, which is best known by its English title Crest of the Stars . The following year, at the Japan SF Convention , Crest of the Stars received the Seiun Prize , a well-known Japanese award for science fiction literature. He published the sequel Seikai no Senki ( 星 界 の 戦 旗 , English Banner of the Stars ), in which he writes that Seikai no Monshō was only the prelude to Seikai no Senki . Morioka had already indicated in the second volume of Crest of the Stars that the complete series would tell the entire life of Princess Lamhirh from her birth to her possible successor to the imperial throne. Four volumes of Banner of the Stars are now available, the first three of which are referred to by Morioka as the Diahoc trilogy . The series is not yet complete, but paused between 2007 and 2013.

In addition to the Seikai series, he has another four-volume Senki ( 戦 記 , dt. "War Tales ") called Tsuki to Honō no Senki ( 月 と 炎 の 戦 記 , dt. "Tale of the moon and flame war") published based on Japanese mythology .

The author is characterized by a keen interest in linguistics (specially constructed languages ), artificial intelligence , bitter humor and very precisely designed worlds.
