Seikai no Monshō

Seikai no Monshō ( Japanese 星 界 の 紋章 "The Crown of the Stars") is a three-volume light novel series by Hiroyuki Morioka that was published in 1996 and belongs to the genre of space opera . In addition to the novels, there is an anime and manga series based on them.

Following Seikai no Monshō , other series of novels, manga and anime appeared called Seikai no Senki ( Japanese 星 界 の 戦 旗 "The Banner of the Stars") and Seikai no Danshō ( 星 界 の 断 章 , "The Shard of the Stars") , which are a follow-up to the Seikai no Monshō series.

action

Seikai no monshō is about Jint Lynn, a young prince. When Jint was a young boy, his homeworld Martine was invaded by the Abh, a human race that lives almost exclusively in space. Jint's father, Rock Lynn, president of Martine at the time of the invasion, surrendered in exchange for titles of nobility and continued rule over Martine, with the planet remaining autonomous. The young Jint was sent to a school to learn the values ​​of Abh. After completing this school, he should continue his education at a military school. On the way there, the young Abh Lamhirh (pronounced Lafiel) takes him to the spaceship Gauthloth in a shuttle. Jint and Lamhirh become friends. Once on board, Jint learns from the commander of the Gauthloth that Lamhirh is a princess and belongs to the ruling family of the Abh, which complicates the relationship between Jint and Lamhirh considerably. The journey with the Gauthloth did not last long, when the two main characters of the story found themselves in the middle of the beginning of a war between the Empire of the Abh and the alliance of the four nations of mankind.

The main characters are Jint and Lamhirh. The focus of the plot is the development of the relationship between the two. The remaining characters add further facets to the story and illustrate the rather difficult and unusual conditions under which this relationship develops.

  • Jint Lynn / Linn ssynec Rocr Dreuc Haïder Ghintec ( リ ン ・ ス ュ ー ヌ ＝ ロ ク ・ハ イ ド 伯爵（ド リ ュ ー ・ ハ イ ダ ル）・ ジ ン ト ), was born on the planet Martine in the Hyde star system. He is the son of Rock Lynn, the president at the time of the invasion by the Abh. As a result of the invasion, Jinto received a title of nobility and was made prince of the Hyde system. He is now also an Abh, although genetic changes have not given him the typical Abh appearance.
  • Ablïarsec néïc Dubreuscr Bœrh Parhynr Lamhirh ( ア ブ リ ア ル ・ ネ イ ＝ ド ゥ ブ レ ス ク ・パ リ ュ ー ニ ュ 子爵（ベ ー ル ・ パ リ ュ ン）・ ラ フ ィ ー ル ) is an Abh-Princess, the granddaughter of the Abh-Empress. Like all Abh, she has blue hair and a natural life expectancy of over 200 years. Lamhirh has gray eyes.

Manga

The manga series consists of the three volumes Seikai no Monshō , Seikai no Senki: Kizuna no Katachi and Seikai no Senki 2: Mamoru beki mono . It was published in Japan by Dengeki Comics between 2000 and 2002 . The illustrations in the first two volumes are by Toshihiro Ono , those of the third by Wasō Miyakoshi ( 宮 越 和 草 ). Aya Yoshinaga ( 吉 永 亜 矢 ), who was responsible for the entire story in the first series, was also responsible for the first manga volume. Outside of Japan, the series appeared in the United States in 2004 on Tokyopop under the title Seikai Trilogy .

On May 22, 2012, a new version drawn by Kōichirō Yonemura started in the web manga magazine FlexComix Next. After the magazine was discontinued, the series switched to the web magazine Comic Meteor in October 2012. The chapters have previously (as of July 2015) been summarized in three anthologies.

Anime

The anime television series consists of 13 episodes and was broadcast on Japanese television on WOWOW . The series has 2 sequels, for Seikai no Senki ( Banner of the Stars , 13 episodes) and Seikai no Senki II ( Banner of the Stars II , 10 episodes). The main series and the first sequel were each cut into a film. The films are titled Crest of the Stars Special Edition and Banner of the Stars Special Edition . In addition to the television series, there are 2 OVA productions, Seikai no Danshō ( Crest of the Stars Lost Chapter ) and Seikai no Senki III ( Banner of the Stars ), which were released in Japan in 2005. Crest of the Stars was released by Bandai in 1999 in Japan and 2001 in the USA.

language

A striking characteristic of the novels and the anime is the fact that Morioka has developed its own language ( Baronh ) and a corresponding alphabet ( Ath ). Baronh is the language of Abh that can be spoken, read and written and is based on ancient Japanese as it was used until the early ninth century.

Morioka uses Furigana to make the reader read the words in Baronh. In Japanese texts, pronunciations are often added over the words written in Kanji . Usually this is done via the kanji, which the average Japanese person does not know. Sometimes, however, a different pronunciation is deliberately given in order to show the reader the meaning of the word, but actually to write a different word (for example, English words that are based on the meaning in Kanji). This means that the actual word in the line should not be read, but the furigana above it.

Such information can be found throughout the book, but only from the point in time from which Ghintec made the Abh. Since this information can only be reproduced in Japanese typography, it was omitted in the English translation, for example, and the baronh was noted in brackets after the English word. In conversations, however, only the words were written in Baronh. There is no English meaning. The English edition offers a dictionary for this, which the Japanese edition lacks.

The use of constructed languages as a stylistic device for narratives is relatively rare but by no means unusual. The best known constructed language is certainly the Newspeak from Orwell's novel 1984 .

An abundance of such languages ​​can be found in the field of fantasy . The languages ​​and scripts in Tolkien's world that the English philologist and writer JRR Tolkien used in The Lord of the Rings are certainly the most mature .

Constructed languages ​​of all kinds can also be found in the field of science fiction, of which only the Klingon language developed by Marc Okrand from the Star Trek universe has achieved a greater degree of popularity.
